Job Description
Title: School Psychologist
Qualifications: Valid Illinois Certificate for School Psychologist Minimum of one year experience, including internship at the elementary or middle school ESSENTIAL
Functions: 1. Use and apply data systems and designs 2. Assist in crisis situations involving physical aggression, CPI 3. Visually observe student behavior 4. Utilize clear oral and written language skills to effectively communicate 5. Collaborate with others
Reports To: Building Administration and Director of Teaching and Learning.
Job Goal: To provide school psychological services to and on behalf of students so that educational and social/emotional development can be enhanced. To provide leadership in Multi-Tier System of Supports strategies, incorporating strong IDEA and ADA Federal Regulations into the educational setting and to provide appropriate support to students and families within the educational setting.
Performance Responsibilities:
The School Psychologist in Maercker School District 60 will be expected to demonstrate the ability to effectively plan and prepare. Evidence of this attribute shall include the following:
- Knowledge and Skills in School Psychology, Theory and Techniques. The School Psychologist shall be knowledgeable of a variety of psychological instruments, CBM, CBE and /or assessment methods (FBA) and uses such techniques to evaluate students and /or programs.
- Knowledge of Students. The School Psychologist shall demonstrate knowledge of child and adolescent and psychopathology and knowledge of developmental characteristics. The psychologist shall use appropriate instruments and practices to gain knowledge of students' backgrounds, skills, and interests.
- Goals and Service Delivery Design. The goals for programming and for working with individual students shall be appropriate to the school situation and to the age of the students. Approved: Maercker School District 60 Board of Education, August 23, 2016
The School Psychologist in Maercker School District 60 will be expected to establish a learning environment that functions effectively. Evidence of this attribute shall include the following:
- Environment of Respect and Rapport. Interactions shall be positive and respectful, reflect interests and concerns for student needs and shall be characterized by sensitivity, responsiveness, and respect for cultural differences.
- Culture for Learning and Positive Mental Health. The School Psychologist shall provide leadership in developing a safe, caring, and inviting school with a sense of community where contributions are valued, where there are high expectations of excellence for all students and where home-school partnerships are valued.
- Managing and Establishing Procedures for Referrals. The School Psychologist shall understand and communicate the MTSS and evaluation procedures to others.The Psychologist will respond to timelines to complete the referral process.
- Management of Student Behavior. The School Psychologist is aware of problematic behaviors and shall positively intervene in various situations using effective management techniques as well as encouragement or incentives. Specific behavioral interventions shall be applied using sound principals of behavior change and shall be result oriented.
- Organization of Physical Space. The School Psychologist shall organize physical space to ensure safety and accessibility and shall ensure that the physical arrangement is inviting and suitable for assessment, counseling, and consultation. Materials shall be stored in a secure location and available when needed.
The School Psychologist in Maercker District 60 shall demonstrate effective instruction by engaging students in their learning. Evidence of this attribute shall include the following:
- Responding to Student Concerns and Providing Consultation. The School Psychologist shall consult with colleagues considering characteristics of assessment, instructional, curricular, and environmental and learner domains.
- Evaluation of Student Needs. The School Psychologist shall use a multi-tiered problem solving approach while addressing students' needs. Spreadsheets and other software programs shall be used to organize and graphically display data and monitor progress.
- Leadership. The School Psychologist shall assume a leadership role on the problem solving and interdisciplinary evaluation teams.
- Planning for Interventions. The School Psychologist shall work collaboratively with others through the problem solving process to develop and develop a continuum of services/interventions for -students (e.g. counseling, classroom intervention plans or programs, crisis intervention, mentoring, and individual safety plans where appropriate Documentation of interventions shall be maintained with confidentiality and in accordance with professional standards.
- Collecting Information and Writing Reports. The School Psychologist shall collect all of the important information on which to base plans and reports. Written information shall be accurate and appropriate for the audience.
- Maintaining Contact with Others. The School Psychologist shall communicate with others in a consistent and effective manner. Active participation in building problem solving meetings, during scheduled consultations, and during trainings shall be consistent and accomplished in a confidential manner.
- Demonstration of Flexibility and Responsiveness. The School Psychologist shall be flexible and responsive to student and staff needs. Revisions to the schedule shall be made as needed and shall be communicated to all in a timely fashion.
The School Psychologist in Maercker District 60 shall demonstrate a commitment to high ethical and professional standards and seek to improve their practice. Evidence of this attribute shall include the following:
- Reflection on Practice. Reflection shall involve an accurate and objective description of practice that can be used to improve individual practice.
- Maintenance of Records. Effective, efficient, and confidential systems shall be developed to maintain reports, records, and information. Reports shall be submitted in a timely manner and within required timeframes. Preparation for IEP meetings shall be done in a timely manner by completing appropriate assessments, documenting student present levels of performance, and assuring all necessary student information is organized and accurate.
- Communication with Families. The School Psychologist shall successfully communicate information with families in a sensitive manner.
- Participation in a Professional Community. The School Psychologist shall participate actively in school or district events and projects and shall maintain positive and productive relationships with colleagues.
- Professional Development. The School Psychologist shall seek opportunities for professional development through membership in professional organizations, staff development, consultation, and research.
- Showing Professionalism. The School Psychologist shall display high standards of honesty, integrity and confidentiality in interactions with colleagues, students, parents and the public. The School Psychologist shall act as an advocate for students and shall comply fully and voluntarily with school and district regulations.
