Job Summary and Qualifications General Statement of Duties The Ultrasound Technologist (sonographer) performs diagnostic procedures utilizing a background in anatomy, physiology, physics and instrumentation to provide technical information to aid the physician. The sonographer will maintain technical skills needed to perform ultrasound procedures to include abdominal, OB/GYN, venous Doppler, small parts, pediatrics (where applicable) and invasive exams. In addition, the sonographer will maintain department supplies and equipment and will participate in the quality control of the ultrasound department. Minimum Education, Experience, Training, Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities and Other Job-Related Characteristics Education: ONE of the following: New Hires as of October 1, 2011: Successful completion of training program in either: Ultrasonography Radiologic Technology Vascular Technology Associates of Science or higher degree Current employees: Successful completion of training program in either: Ultrasonography Radiologic Technology Vascular Technology Associates degree or higher degree Medical Assisting Experience: none required Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility and department/unit which are specific to the needs of the patient population served (if applicable). Preferred: Two (2) years experience as a fulltime ultrasound technologist in a hospital or diagnostic imaging clinic setting. Minimum License, Certificates, or Registrations Required: A. American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) i. RDMS- Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ABD, OBGYN or BR) B. American Registry of Radiologic Technologist ARRT (S) Essential Job Functions Maintains skills and understanding of innovation in techniques and equipment in medical sonography. Assists physicians in performing ultrasound-guided biopsies and other invasive procedures. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Responsible for the proper use of the Radiology Computer System (scheduling exams, patient tracking, film tracking, proper completion of exams, capture charges). Follows safety policies and procedures applicable to the job. Understands and follows infection control/universal precautions; maintains order and cleanliness. Additional Job Functions May have access to radiopharmaceuticals, contrast agents and other non-controlled medications as appropriate to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Supports the mission and vision of the South Texas Radiology Imaging Centers (STRIC) and demonstrates excellent customer service at all times. Understands and is committed to helping STRIC and its associated facilities achieve its goals. Must learn and comply with System and facility safety policies and rules; must use appropriate safety equipment and procedures at all times; must immediately report all unsafe conditions to supervisors. Understand and enforces system, departmental policies and procedures, as well as, established rules and regulations. Actively participates in the orientation and training of new employees and students. Completes other duties as assigned.
