Job Title Float Phlebotomist – Full Time Responsibilities Perform venipuncture and capillary blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles on patients from neonatal through geriatric populations, including heel sticks. Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols. Explain venipuncture, blood draw, and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear and courteous manner. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all patient and test information is accurate and complete. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders to maintain specimen integrity. Verify test requisitions or computer‑generated labels against orders or scripts for 100% accuracy before processing. Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature using appropriate containers and tubes. Follow all procedures and protocols to preserve specimen integrity during handling, processing, and transport. Interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory tests and specimen requirements. Update and maintain accurate patient and specimen information in computer systems and records. Record maintenance data and assist with decontamination and other routine laboratory support tasks. Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries, following applicable guidelines. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and infection control procedures. Attend annual departmental trainings and participate in ongoing education related to phlebotomy and laboratory procedures. Assist in troubleshooting specimen collection or processing issues and recommend workflow improvements. Participate in training on drug screening, point‑of‑care testing, and fingerprinting, and perform these tasks once trained. Draw up to 30–50 samples per day. Qualifications Experience working with pediatric and geriatric patient populations in a clinical setting. Previous experience as a phlebotomist in a hospital or high‑volume laboratory environment. Comfort floating between multiple sites and adapting to different teams and workflows. Strong customer service skills and a patient‑focused approach during all interactions. Ability to troubleshoot basic specimen collection and processing issues and suggest workflow improvements. Experience with neonatal/geriatric phlebotomy, including heel sticks. Proficiency with straight and butterfly needles, computer skills, and clear written and verbal communication. Work Environment Float Phlebotomist throughout Chicagoland (Joliet, Oakbrook, Mokena, Merrionette Park, Downtown Chicago, Waukegan, and other locations). Schedule Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri: 6:00 AM–6:00 PM Wed: 6:00 AM–7:30 PM Every other Saturday: currently 8:00 AM–12:00 PM in Joliet (may change) Training Location‐specific training; refer to the schedule above for availability.
