Fulfillment Technician

The Fulfillment Technician supports a long-term care pharmacy by accurately filling and compounding medications for residents in nursing homes, assisted living communities, and group homes. This role focuses on high-volume prescription fulfillment, including daily and cycle fills, while maintaining strict adherence to pharmacy policies, procedures, and quality standards. The technician works closely with nursing staff by phone to confirm dosages and ensure safe and timely delivery of medications for a large patient population.

Responsibilities

  • Fill medications accurately and efficiently for residents in long-term care settings, including nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and group homes.
  • Compound medications such as ointments and other pharmaceutical preparations according to established pharmacy procedures and guidelines.
  • Perform phone-based work by communicating with nursing staff to confirm medication dosages and clarify prescription details as needed.
  • Fill prescriptions for a large volume of patients, supporting a facility that services approximately 1,000 beds.
  • Label prescriptions clearly and correctly, ensuring all required information appears on each label in accordance with pharmacy standards.
  • Follow all pharmacy policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements to ensure safety, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Work within the daily fill department to prepare prescriptions that must be ready to ship the same day, including new or missed medications from previous orders.
  • Work within the cycle fill department to fill blister cards and bottles of medications designed to last 30 or more days for each patient.
  • Maintain a steady production pace in a high-volume environment while preserving accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Stand for extended periods while performing filling, compounding, labeling, and other production-related tasks.
  • Collaborate with pharmacy team members to prioritize orders and meet shipping and delivery timelines.
  • Handle medications and packaging materials safely and in an organized manner to support efficient workflow.

Essential Skills

  • 1–3+ years of experience working in a pharmacy or a production-based position such as serving, warehouse, assembly, or similar roles.
  • Experience as a pharmacy technician or in a closely related medication-handling role.
  • Ability to follow detailed pharmacy policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Strong attention to detail when filling, compounding, and labeling prescriptions.
  • Comfort communicating by phone with nursing staff to confirm medication dosages and clarify orders.
  • Ability to work effectively in a production environment with high volumes and time-sensitive tasks.
  • Capability to stand for long periods of time while performing job duties.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Pharmacy technician certification is preferred and may be associated with higher compensation.
  • Prior experience in long-term care, institutional, or non-retail pharmacy environments is beneficial.
  • Background in roles such as serving, warehouse, or assembly that demonstrate comfort with production workflows.
  • Familiarity with filling blister cards and bottles for 30-day or longer medication cycles.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting.

Work Environment

This role is based in a long-term care pharmacy environment, not a retail pharmacy. The technician supports medication fulfillment for nursing homes, assisted living communities, and group homes. The setting is production-oriented, making it well-suited for individuals who have previously worked in warehouse, assembly, or other high-volume production environments. The dress code is casual; team members may wear jeans and T-shirts, with closed-toe shoes required. Shorts are permitted if they are longer than above the knee, and open-shoulder shirts are not allowed. The position requires standing for long periods while filling, compounding, and labeling medications. Fulfillment technicians work rotating shifts Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., with scheduled shifts typically running from 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., 9:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m., or 10:30 a.m.–7:00 p.m. Technicians also rotate weekend coverage, generally working one weekend every three to four weeks, with Saturday hours from 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. and Sunday hours from 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. The weekly schedule adjusts to provide one day off and reduced hours on other days to balance weekend work. The environment emphasizes reliability, accuracy, and teamwork to ensure that all medications are prepared and shipped safely and on time.
