Job Description Medical Laboratory Scientist II – Rockville, MD – Monday to Friday, 10:45 PM to 7:15 AM, with rotational weekends. Perform test procedures of moderate/high complexity requiring the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility in specialties in which you are qualified by education, training and experience. Pay range: $29.13 – $48.06 per hour. Employees may be eligible for a 10% shift differential for second‑shift hours and a 15% shift differential for third‑shift hours. Senior candidates may be eligible for an annual performance‑bonus compensation. Provide support to the department in quality control, troubleshooting complex problems, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement, and special projects as assigned. Perform and report assigned analytical tests in accordance with applicable SOPs, ensuring quality control requirements are met. Support and comply with laboratory policies for specimen handling, test analysis, reporting, and record maintenance. Adhere to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround times, including stats or critical results. Ensure reagents/test kits have received dates and expiration dates and, if applicable, opening dates. Perform and document QC analysis to ensure accuracy of clinical data and proper instrument function; make quality control decisions regarding assay or test disposition. Inform supervisory personnel of all problems related to test procedures. Report actual or potential deviations from standard or accepted testing procedures and cooperate fully with investigations. Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System for standardized reporting to physicians. Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional, and sanitary condition. Complete training and competency checklists as appropriate. Assist supervisor with training of other laboratory personnel. Adhere to all established CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety requirements. Use personal protective equipment, engineering controls, or work‑practice controls as directed by management. Answer questions from clients or other lab personnel, if applicable. Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections, if needed. Assume lead responsibilities if qualified and delegated in the absence of a supervisor. Other duties as assigned. This is a general description of work performed by the position. Qualifications Required Work Experience One year full‑time experience or training in high‑complexity testing in a clinical laboratory setting. Preferred Work Experience Minimum of three years clinical experience with the most current year in the present department. Physical And Mental Requirements Normal performance may require lifting and carrying: 1–10 pounds frequently; 11–25 pounds occasionally; 36–50 pounds rarely; over 50 pounds without assistance. Ability to stand and work at the bench for long periods. Frequent walking and/or standing. May be required to use a variety of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments demanding significant manual dexterity. Knowledge Comprehensive job knowledge in assigned specialty. Knowledge of organizational/departmental policies and procedures. BS/BA in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology, or associate’s degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, or prior qualification as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433 published March 14, 1990. Foreign‑educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from IERF (International Education Research Foundation). U.S.‑educated candidates must provide a detailed original transcript. Other state‑specific requirements may apply; check with local HR or QA departments. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Laboratory Information Systems. Education Associate’s degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology (preferred). Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Biology or Chemistry (preferred). Licenses and Certifications ASCP Certification (preferred).
