Field Organizer – Remote

The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is pleased to announce a position for a Field Organizer, to be filled as soon as possible. AAUP is a fast-growing union of higher education workers. We are mobilizing the higher ed sector against increasing partisan attacks that undermine academic freedom and attacks on important gains of the civil rights movement. Our goal is to defend the higher ed sector while also leading the fight for fair wages, job security, academic freedom, an end to student debt, and expanded collective bargaining rights for higher education workers. AAUP is looking for an individual who will help transform the Association into an organized, fighting union.

The field organizer will join our growing organizing department. They will work on either new organizing or internal organizing. The field organizer will also work to move the organization toward membership growth and growing sectoral power. This position requires extensive travel throughout the United States and reports to the Director of Organizing and Services.

Duties and Responsibilities

The position will include the following responsibilities:

• Support higher education workers through NLRB elections and state public elections.
• Collaborate effectively with organizing staff, incorporate coaching and feedback, and adapt organizing approaches to meet campaign needs.
• Identify, recruit and develop workplace leaders.
• Utilize Microsoft Office and membership database systems to support organizing efforts.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with faculty.
• Use campaign data, membership databases, and other organizing tools to assess progress, identify opportunities, and inform organizing strategy.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of three years of union organizing experience.
• Experience organizing units of 500 or more workers.
• Demonstrated adaptability and willingness to learn new organizing strategies.
• Experience as part of a successful organizing team resulting in a union election victory.
• Demonstrated experience identifying, recruiting, and developing workplace leaders.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to a worker-led organizing model that emphasizes identifying, developing, and empowering workplace leaders.
• Demonstrated ability to recruit, identify, and develop workplace leaders.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced organizing environment while adapting to changing priorities.
• Knowledge of federal and state labor laws affecting higher education organizing.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and union membership database systems.
• Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and higher education union organizing experience.
• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel throughout the United States and work evenings, weekends, and holidays as campaign needs require.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working on contract campaigns and bargaining contracts at the table.
• Knowledge of higher education job classification and workplace issues.
• Experience organizing higher education workers, and winning, strongly preferred but not mandatory.

Compensation

Salary range: $90,356.70 to $110,144.31. AAUP offers a generous benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision insurance; paid sick days; paid vacations days; and 401(K).

Position Classification

This position is designated as a Senior Program Officer and is included in the staff union bargaining unit. This is an exempt position and not eligible for overtime pay.

Work Location

This position is remote and does not require relocation. However, the Field Organizer will travel frequently to multiple in-person work sites on college and university campuses nationwide, sometimes on short notice. Preference given to candidates in areas where campaigns are currently planned.
