Registered Nurse (Flex) - Operating Room

Perioperative Nurse

In addition to general nursing, is responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the OR and other areas of perioperative services for all patient populations.

Responsibilities

1. Assesses patients at intervals as stated in policies and procedures.
2. Functions in the scrub and or circulating role during operative or other invasive procedures in accordance with scope of practice, credentials, privileges, education, and experience
3. Ensures the operative procedure is being performed on the correct patient and site, side and level by: Reviewing the operative schedule; Reviewing the operative consent; Verifying procedure site and side with patient; Resolving identified discrepancy with surgeon and patient, prior to the patient being taken to the operating room; and participating in the pre-procedure verification, per-incision "Time Out" and sign out process.
4. Develops an individualized perioperative patient plan of care. Implements the plan of care by: protecting the patient from injury caused by chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources and extraneous objects; performing accounting procedures to protect the patient from unintended retained surgical items; performing interventions necessary to ensure that the patient's procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level; managing the patient's specimens in the appropriate manner; communicating the patient's status to the appropriate parties throughout the continuum of care; administering medications safely and correctly; performing interventions to maintain the patient's wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels; performing interventions to maintain the status of the patient's genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems and fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances at or above baseline levels;
5. Providing education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure;
6. Actively involving the patient or designated support person in decisions affecting his or her perioperative plan of care and the rehabilitation process.
7. Documents nursing care accurately, completely, and legibly.
8. Collaborates effectively with other disciplines as appropriate.
9. Participates in quality review and performance improvement projects.
10. Uses problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members.
11. All other duties as requested.

Qualifications

Education:

Internal & 1199 SEIU:

• Graduate of accredited nursing program(s).
• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.

Non 1199 SEIU Candidates:

• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
• Master's Degree in Nursing, preferred.

Experience:

• Minimum two (2) years' operating room experience.

Knowledge and Skills:

• Critical thinking, math, and computer skills.
• Works as a team player.
• Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions.
• Excellent oral and communication skills.
• Decision making and problem solving.
• Able to read, write, see and hear English.

Licenses, Certifications:

• Current NY State RN License required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association, required.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association, required.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association, required.
• Certified Nurse, Operating Room (CNOR) certification, preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Physically demanding, high-stress environment requiring prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
• Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift and carry items weighing up to 35 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.
• An individual in this position may be exposed to: Adverse indoor environmental conditions, Blood borne pathogens, Blood and body fluids, Physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.), communicable diseases, chemical hazards, radiation, and repetitive motions.
• Full range of body motion, able to lift up to 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist lifting and moving patients.
• Manual and finger dexterity, as well as hand and eye coordination.
• Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range.
• Frequently sitting at desk working on computer.
• Ability to flex working hours.
