Job no: 557071 Work type: Staff Location: San José Categories: Unit 4 - APC - Academic Professionals of California, Probationary, Full Time, Student Services, On-site (work in-person at business location) Job Summary Reporting to the Director for the Gender Equity Center (GenEC), the Program Coordinator for the Gender Equity Center supports the center’s mission by managing daily operations, creating a welcoming environment, and assisting in the coordination, implementation, and assessment of programs and services that promote education, leadership, support, student success, professional development, and engagement activities for students; with a focus on addressing issues regarding gender. Under the supervision of the Director, the Program Coordinator serves as a key point of contact for students, staff and community members and supports outreach, events, and program/campus initiatives. The Program Coordinator will train, supervise, and evaluate student undergraduate and graduate student assistants in a manner that empowers them to lead their own projects and achieve desired outcomes for the programs they support. By collaborating with campus and community partners, and by contributing to assessment and operational efficiency, the Program Coordinator helps ensure the GenEC remains a vital resource for fostering inclusion, creating safety for all Spartans, and student success. The Program Coordinator will ensure an affirming space within the center that values and promotes an appreciation for the diverse student communities at SJSU. Key Responsibilities Designs, develops, and implements programs and workshops that support and promote education, advising support, leadership and professional development, and academic success for students; specifically addressing issues regarding gender. Identify and address barriers to retention and graduation by creating specialized initiatives that meet student needs. Support the implementation of education, leadership, and co-curricular activities and programs that have included, South Bay Conference on Gender, Lunch & Learns, Domestic Violence & Intimate Partner Violence Month, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Women’s History Month. Collaborate with campus departments and organizations, and community partners on events and programs that focus on examining student’s gender experiences from an intersectional lens in relation to themselves and their communities. Stay informed and be familiar with institutional policies and procedures as it relates to program and event planning, and implementation. Collaborate with the Director to develop and deliver high impact programs in relation to student success. Be familiar with institutional policies and procedures as it relates to program/event planning and implementation. Assist the Director with the development of learning outcomes for the Gender Equity Center’s programs; and create assessments to evaluate the programming of the Gender Equity Center to ensure the center is providing experiences that contribute to the individual growth, educational goals, and retention of students who engage with the Gender Equity Center. Responsible for maintaining records and summary reports of Gender Equity Center programming, activities, and events to be submitted monthly. Ensure student assistants create and provide a Gender Equity Center that is a welcoming space for everyone. Manage student assistants to work collaboratively on programs, events, and projects. Supervise, guide, and coach student staff leaders in their social, leadership, academic, and identity development; Support and advocate for students’ holistic well-being. Take the lead in ensuring the Gender Equity Center’s representation and participation in campus-wide outreach efforts (e.g. Admitted Spartan Day, University Orientation Programs, Weeks of Welcome, etc.) Lead outreach and retention efforts through tabling at campus and community events. Identify, build, and maintain relationships with gender focused affinity groups, including student, staff, faculty, alum, and community organizations. Participate in campus gender equity initiatives such as serving on university committees. Assist with the development, deployment, and management of marketing and publicity materials for events and campaigns, such as, flyers, emails, newsletters, posters, presentations, brochures, videos, websites, and social media platforms. Writes, edits, and manages content of the center website. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of how issues of gender impact individuals and society. Ability to produce culturally appropriate educational events, programs, and projects from inception to execution. Ability to effectively prioritize multiple work priorities and organize various projects and to follow safety and confidentiality protocols. Knowledge of software applications: such as word processing, spreadsheet, and drawing/illustration. Ability to prepare various documents including operations manuals and procedures, program and activity schedules, and budget reports. General knowledge of Title IX and its application at SJSU. Knowledge of assessment techniques and ability to develop cohesive reports. Ability to promote, organize and facilitate group meetings. Ability to provide student assistants with guidance and direction to accomplish tasks. Ability to facilitate a collaborative environment. Apply judgment, discretion and maintain confidentiality in performing complex tasks. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling. Ability to present clear and concise information orally and in written reports. Ability to work in a social justice oriented organization. Ability to rapidly acquire a working knowledge of the Gender Equity Center and its partnerships on the campus and within the community. Ability to support students, staff, and faculty though a variety of situations and make appropriate referrals to campus and community agencies. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills. Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations/reports based on these data. Ability to apply high-level analytical skills to take effective action while independently carrying out assigned responsibilities. Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements. Ability to keep supervisor informed about goal progress and relevant campus partner initiatives. Ability to recommend initiatives and changes to improve quality of services/programs. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts Ability to work some evenings and weekends. Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner. Required Qualifications Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related. Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Gender Studies, Behavioral Sciences, Public Health, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work or related field. Experience developing and implementing educational programs, workshops, or retention initiatives that support historically underrepresented students and address gender- related issues, with a demonstrated commitment to closing equity gaps. 2 years of program coordination experience in a college setting. Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in higher education. Experience hiring, training, and supervising college student staff.
