Equipment Operator

Position Description An equipment operator operates a variety of equipment including tractors, scrapers, forklifts, bobcats, backhoes, excavators, front‑loader side booms, and semi‑tractor trailers. Essential Job Functions Regular and reliable attendance. Prepared and on time for scheduled shift with proper PPE. Responsible for Daily Shift validations. Safely drive company vehicles and possess a current valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Hold appropriate certifications to operate the equipment used. Conduct pre‑trip vehicle inspections, checking all fluids, tires, lights and signs. Gather and fill out appropriate job permits with correct signatures. Follow and/or complete the Detailed Daily Work Plan; ensure crew actively participates and follows each procedure. Be aware of hazards in hazardous atmospheres; perform job walks to identify and mitigate hazards. Participate in safety audits and report near hits to supervision. Perform monthly equipment tool audits to ensure compliance (vehicle registration, fire extinguisher). Operate equipment safely and efficiently, loading and unloading material as needed. Execute tasks assigned by Crew Lead or Supervisor. Perform various duties such as setting and removing shoring boxes, digging and back‑filling ditches and trenches. Shoot elevations with eye level and/or laser. Test for H2S or oxygen‑deficient atmospheres with a monitor. Be actively involved in all safety processes. Develop knowledge of SOPs and refer to the SOPs to ensure compliance. Follow all company and customer policies and procedures. Perform all physical and mental requirements listed. Position Requirements Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to read and write in English. Ability to comprehend and communicate instructions in English. Professional and courteous communication with employees, customers, vendors, and sub‑contractors. Knowledge of Lock Out/Tag Out processes. Knowledge of electronic equipment and technology (iPads, cell phones). Knowledge of Stop Work Authority. Completion of all required safety training. Ability to work with pipe and hand wrenches, hammers, shovels, and gas monitors. Use of gas monitors. Knowledge of rigging loads, loading equipment onto tractor trailers, and securing for transport. Operation of various types of equipment controls (Case, John Deere, Caterpillar) and load charts. Demonstration of basic construction safety rules. Dig excavations, build locations, perform road repair as directed. Education and Experience Preferably 1–2 years of industry experience with in‑depth knowledge of the equipment operated. Working Conditions The locations vary from site to site. Work is physically demanding, requiring concentration in all types of weather. Majority of the work is construction‑based. Walking and surfaces vary by terrain, from flat to extreme slopes, and can be frozen, wet, snowy, and slippery. Working Hours Full‑time employees normally work 40 hours per week; schedules may vary with weather and project needs. Typical schedules include 5–8’s and 4–10’s.
