Job Overview Ann & Robert H. Responsibilities Obtain blood specimens from patients using standardized venipuncture, capillary puncture, and specialized procedures. Identify each patient or patient sample using two patient identifiers prior to obtaining or labeling specimens appropriately. Collect specimens by iontophoresis for sweat chloride testing with maintenance procedures and function checks on the equipment. Maintain courteous greetings for visitors, patients or families to the laboratory. Communicate effectively with patients, parents, physicians, ancillary hospital employees and team members. Review registration information and direct questions to update any changes. Verify orders and diagnosis codes with the ordering physician as needed. Utilize the laboratory and hospital computer systems to order and receive laboratory specimens and charges, report laboratory results to the physician and ancillary staff, retrieve collection lists, and verify account numbers. Schedule appointments and/or complete check-in/out procedures and end-of-session audits in EMR system when necessary. Orient/training new and current staff and document in competencies. Participate in continuing education and mandatory programs. Successfully complete annual competency skill assessments as assigned. Act as a role model for staff compliance with Hospital policies and procedures. Display professional appearance and promote a professional environment, including emphasis on cleanliness and safety. Maintain/order routine supplies and inventories for workstation and department. Prioritize work to ensure timely and efficient flow of specimens with attention on stats and time-sensitive tests. Assist in coordination of research and special studies, and referral (send-out) testing. Resolve and document problem specimens. Act as a resource person for the team. Cancel tests when necessary, communicate with patient care units/clinics to resolve problem specimens or questionable orders. When appropriate, assist in delegating daily work assignments, breaks, lunches and preparation of the schedule to ensure optimal customer service. Create department documents, procedures, and forms as needed. Communicate any problems or deviations from established protocol to Leadership and document in SERS. Perform job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others. Minimum Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or medical technology preferred. Formal training as Medical Assistant or Phlebotomist preferred. Minimum of 2 years of experience as Phlebotomist I or equivalent job experience with successful completion of CLA Senior competencies. Required certification in phlebotomy, PBT (ASCP) or equivalent. Basic knowledge of medical/laboratory terminology required. Ability to resolve problems with the utilization of appropriate resources, to make informed decisions and handle complex inquiries in a courteous and timely manner; to work in a fast-paced, time critical department. Strong verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated knowledge of Hospital and laboratory computer systems required. Education High School Diploma/GED (Required) (PBT-ASCP) - Phlebotomy Technician - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification Compensation Pay Range $19.50-$30.23 Hourly.
