Railcar Mechanical Systems Fabricator (AAR/FRA)Role focusRestore and enhance railcars to meet AAR, FMO, FRA, TTX, and customer standards.Rebuild critical assemblies: bolsters, side frames, hitch heads, and boxcar doors.Perform fabrication and welding (about 30% of your time) and extensive mechanical work (about 95% of the role) using blueprints and precision tools.Diagnose issues by inspectionaided by touch, training, and experienceand correct them using hand and power tools.Operate forklifts to move, align, and place heavy components.Cut and thread pipe; replace air lines using appropriate hand tools.Assemble major components and subassemblies; test operations to verify performance.Repair broken parts using hand tools and welding equipment.Document repair work using an electronic keyboard entry system.Success measuresComplete each assignment within defined time targets.Comply with all shop rules and safety procedures.Deliver workmanship that meets or exceeds industry and customer requirements.Tools and machineryCircular saw; assorted hand tools.Air impacts (1/2", 3/4", 1"); air grinders (4", 7", 9").Air or hydraulic portable power pump and ram.Cutting torch (frequent use), heating torch for bending (regular use), side grinder (regular use).Hoist (regular lifting) and winch (regular pulling).Safety gearSteel-toe shoes, hard hat, earplugs, safety glasses, welding shield, burning goggles, grinding shield, and long-sleeved shirts/long pants for welding tasks.Who thrives hereMechanically skilled problem-solvers with welding and cutting capabilities.Individuals comfortable making repair/replace decisions (intermediate reasoning and short-term memory), organizing limited plans/schedules, and compiling/classifying information at an intermediate level.Physical profileDuration guides (site dependent): standing, hearing, and seeing for 8 or 10 hours; handling for 6 hours; walking/stooping/kneeling/crouching/fingering for 5 hours; reaching below waist/twisting/feeling for 2 hours; sitting/climbing/balancing/crawling/reaching overhead/talking for 1 hour.Frequent: standing, kneeling, stretching, reaching, gripping, bending at the waist.Regular: walking, crouching, twisting while standing. Occasional: sitting, crawling, twisting while sitting for up to 1 hour.Lifting: 180 lbs. components during the day (1025 lbs. frequent; 2550 lbs. regular; >50 lbs. occasional).Occasional use of wrenches up to 10 lbs. for up to 4 hours.Pulling: 1025 lbs. frequent; 2550 lbs. regular; >50 lbs. occasional; carrying 5075 lbs.Work environmentOutdoor work 8 or 10 hours/day with exposure to heat, cold/humidity; regular work at heights; occasional proximity to moving machinery.Exposure to welding/burning fumes, odors, dust, gases, and high noise up to 10 hours/day; hot temperatures regularly; cold occasionally; occasional driving of automotive equipment; regular oil/grease and vibration; occasional solitary work.Frequent hazards: mechanical (tools), electrical (welders), radiant energy (torches) for up to 10 hours/day.Schedule, reporting, and extras8310-hour shifts with changing hours and rest days.Reports to a line supervisor or work group supervisor.Help keep the shop clean; set up/operate welders or grinders as needed; perform other tasks as assigned.Pay and benefitsStarting at $28/hour; actual rate based on Carman/Journeyman status.Total Rewards include Paid Time Off; Health, Dental, and Vision insurance; and a 401(k) with company match.
