Overview
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet VHA policy eligibility and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Award amounts up to $200,000 and eligibility periods of one to five years are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements specified in the job announcement. Pending completion of training or license requirements, applicants may be referred and tentatively selected, but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA physicians who were appointed under the previous qualification standard are deemed to have met the basic requirements for this occupation.
Basic Requirements
- United States citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
- Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a VA‑approved school.
- Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
- Residency training completed in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification, or meeting equivalent alternative criteria (listed).
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Preferred experience: board certification or eligibility in internal medicine or family practice; current Basic Life Support certification; experience as a primary care physician in the VA system; experience with an electronic medical or health record.
- Physical requirements: meet position physical standards, undergo pre‑placement physical examination, designated drug‑testing position, ability to lift 15‑44 pounds and perform tasks described.
- Hearing aid permitted.
- Residency options: (1) ACGME or AOA accredited residency leading to board certification; (2) One year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice; (3) Non‑U.S. residency followed by minimum of three years of independent practice in the U.S. (subject to local approval).
- Exceptions: Residents in approved programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) under regulated conditions.
Duties
- Provide primary care services as a PCP in a community‑based outpatient clinic under a team‑based Patient Aligned Care Team model.
- Manage a panel of 800‑1,200 patients, offering chronic disease management, preventive care, and common diagnoses such as diabetes, hypertension, COPD, arthritis, depression, CHF, and chronic pain.
- Evaluate, diagnose, treat, and consult non‑surgical adult patients of all ages without life‑threatening complications.
- Assess and stabilize patients with emergent conditions, determining disposition per medical staff policy.
- Collaborate with mid‑level providers and other specialties within and outside the VA to manage patient health.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
