Position Details Job Code: JC-521274 Position Number: 680-137-3946-015 Title: Track Inspector/Investigator Classification: RAIL SAFETY INSPECTOR Salary Range: $7,136.00 - $8,934.00 Effective Date: July 1, 2025 Number of Positions: 1 Work Location: Sacramento County Telework: In Office Job Type: Permanent, Full Time Department Information The mission of the Rail Safety Division (RSD) is to promote safe and reliable rail transportation in California through inspection and enforcement, fostering a positive rail safety culture. RSD enforces state and federal laws related to rail transportation and comprises the Railroad Operations Safety Branch (ROSB), Rail Crossings and Engineering Branch (RCEB), and Rail Transit Safety Branch (RTSB). Job Description and Duties Work under the supervision of a Rail Safety Inspector‑Supervisor (Superintendent) and a Rail Safety Inspector‑Senior. Conduct field surveys, surveillance, investigations, routine and focused inspections of railroads. Research and analyze risks to evaluate rail safety culture, safety policies, and regulatory compliance concerning rail track maintenance. Assign an inspection territory and work primarily in the field; a home office will be provided near the assigned territory. Be available for statewide assignments or tasks as deemed necessary. Report to the local CPUC headquarters office for Central Region section of ROSB activities. All onsite work is conducted in the Central Region section and will be home‑based. Special Requirements Valid California driver’s license required. Eligible for state employment or possessing state eligibility credentials. Qualifications Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications stated in the Classification Specification(s). Relevant experience, education, and training related to rail safety inspections and investigations are required.
