Lead Quality Engineer - Test Data Management

OverviewResponsible for defining, architecting, advancing, and evangelizing enterprise Test Data Management (TDM), Test Automation, and Quality Engineering capabilities while serving as the enterprise technical authority for testing platforms, frameworks, automation standards, and test data services. Responsible at the expert level for writing code, technical requirements gathering, creating enterprise standards, and guiding engineering practices that improve software quality, delivery speed, resiliency, security, and compliance.Primary ResponsibilitiesDevelop enterprise strategies, standards, roadmaps, and implementation frameworks for Test Data Management, Test Automation, Continuous Testing, and Quality Engineering capabilities.Serve as the enterprise technical authority for Test Data Management, Test Automation, Testing Platforms, Testing Frameworks, Continuous Testing, and Quality Governance.Develop and coach team members while working independently on applications and platforms within approved SDLC processes.Define, maintain, and govern enterprise standards, implementation patterns, reusable frameworks, methodologies, and engineering best practices.Provide technical leadership for Test Data Management capabilities, including Delphix virtualization, data masking, self-service provisioning, synthetic data generation, test data lifecycle management, and environment optimization.Define and maintain enterprise testing frameworks supporting functional, API, integration, end-to-end, regression, performance, continuous, and user acceptance testing activities.Establish and evolve enterprise automation approaches utilizing SmartBear Zephyr, Selenium, Playwright, Cucumber, Postman, REST Assured, GitLab, GitLab CI/CD, Jira, Delphix, and enterprise reporting platforms.Create enterprise standards and reference architectures for test automation, test data management, test case management, API testing, CI/CD testing integration, quality gates, environment management, test data masking, and test execution reporting.Drive adoption of shift-left testing, continuous testing, behavior-driven development (BDD), automated quality gates, and self-service test data provisioning.Review and approve designs, solution architectures, pull requests, technical proposals, and implementation approaches to ensure alignment with enterprise architecture, security, compliance, and engineering standards.Author organized, clean, efficient, secure, and resilient source code at the expert level in at least one programming language and coach others on appropriate design patterns, data structures, and development practices.Design and implement automated workflows integrating testing tools, Delphix services, GitLab CI/CD pipelines, application environments, and enterprise monitoring solutions.Develop reusable accelerators, automation libraries, templates, integration patterns, and implementation frameworks to improve delivery consistency and efficiency.Review testing methodologies, automation coverage, and code quality practices while coaching others on improvements and quality engineering best practices.Drive implementation adherence to performance testing, resiliency, optimization, automation, and quality engineering standards.Partner with Architecture and Engineering leaders to define long-term quality engineering strategies, platform roadmaps, and transformation initiatives.Lead complex enterprise onboarding initiatives for teams adopting testing platforms, frameworks, automation capabilities, and TDM services.Collaborate with application teams to understand testing and data requirements and translate business needs into scalable enterprise solutions.Establish governance processes and technical standards for testing tools, automation frameworks, test data management, and quality reporting.Partner with Engineering, Security, Risk, and Compliance teams to ensure testing and TDM capabilities meet regulatory, information security, privacy, and data protection requirements.Drive implementation of data masking, sensitive data protection controls, and compliant test data provisioning strategies.Define and monitor key performance indicators including automation coverage, test execution efficiency, defect leakage, defect escape rates, test data provisioning speed, environment utilization, platform availability, quality trends, adoption metrics, and testing cycle times.Conduct maturity assessments and develop enterprise improvement recommendations for testing and quality engineering practices.Lead technology evaluations, proof-of-concepts, and recommendations involving AI-assisted testing, intelligent test generation, predictive quality analytics, agentic testing solutions, and modern automation frameworks.Provide technical oversight and architectural guidance for vendor-delivered solutions supporting Quality Engineering and Test Data Management functions.Establish operational standards, resiliency patterns, reference runbooks, service objectives, and support models for enterprise platforms.Communicate architecture, technical strategy, platform metrics, progress, risks, and recommendations to business stakeholders, technology leadership, architecture review boards, and governance forums.Lead communities of practice, engineering forums, and knowledge-sharing initiatives focused on testing excellence and quality engineering maturity.Develop and maintain enterprise documentation, reference architectures, implementation guides, standards, governance materials, and technical procedures.Serve as a key partner across organizational boundaries and recommend continuous improvements where technical or architectural concerns require attention.Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls in accordance with the Company's Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.Promote an environment that supports a culture of belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.Complete other related duties as assigned.Education and Experience RequiredAssociate’s degree and a minimum of 7 years’ systems analysis and/or application development work experience or Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 5 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience. In lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 9 year’s education and/or relevant work experience, including a minimum of 5 years’ system analysis and/or application development work experience.Expert proficiency in a minimum of 1 relevant programming language and professional proficiency in a minimum of 1 additional relevant programming language.Experience implementing enterprise testing, automation, quality engineering, or test data management solutions.Experience developing enterprise standards, frameworks, governance processes, reference architectures, and implementation patterns.Experience integrating testing capabilities into DevOps and CI/CD delivery pipelines.Strong understanding of Agile delivery methodologies, SDLC practices, DevOps principles, software quality engineering concepts, and enterprise testing strategies.Strong understanding of risk management, information security, compliance, data privacy, and regulatory requirements.Education and Experience PreferredHands-on experience with Delphix, SmartBear Zephyr, Selenium, Playwright, Cucumber, Postman, GitLab, GitLab CI/CD, Jira, and REST Assured.Experience with enterprise Test Data Management, data masking, synthetic test data generation, and test environment optimization.Experience creating enterprise testing platforms, automation frameworks, and quality engineering standards.Expert analytical skills specific to application development and software quality engineering.Experience working in a team environment.Ability to work autonomously.Ability to multitask on multiple complex projects.Strong organizational and time management skills.Advanced verbal and written communication skills.Experience driving project milestones and delivery dates.Proven experience leading complex technical initiatives and enterprise transformation efforts.Experience partnering with and presenting to senior technology leaders, architects, engineers, and business stakeholders across multiple departments.Experience within highly regulated industries such as financial services.Experience evaluating emerging quality engineering technologies, AI-assisted testing tools, and intelligent automation solutions.M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $116,400.00 - $194,000.00 Annual (USD).
