Afterschool and Summer Programs Supervisor

SLC Public Library

Afterschool and Summer Programs Supervisor Salt Lake City Public Library 210 East 400 South Salary: Starting at $33.17/hour or $68,993.60/annual DOE Posted: August 18, 2026 Closes: September 1, 2026 FLSA Status: Full-time / Exempt Reports to: Youth Development Manager Note: This position is currently open to regular part-time and full-time employees of the Salt Lake City Public Library only. About the Library The City Library aspires to be a dynamic civic resource that promotes free and open access to information, materials and services to all members of the community to advance knowledge, foster creativity, encourage the exchange of ideas, build community and enhance the quality of life. Guided by a deep understanding of the aspirations, needs, and motivations of our customers, The City Library takes a human-centered approach to designing and delivering meaningful services, collections, resources, spaces, programs and events to all members of the community. Library staff are highly engaged, purpose-driven, people-centered, and express a high level of satisfaction with their work. About the Position Built on the principles of Positive Youth Development, the After School Supervisor leads the Library's after school enrichment and educational offerings for students across the system. This is an outward-facing role. The person in it spends real time at community tables learning what students and families need after the school day ends, then turns what they learn into programming the Library can deliver well. Working under the direction of the Youth Development Manager, the Supervisor identifies and cultivates partnerships with youth-serving organizations to expand Library offerings and engages in direct service with youth patrons. The Supervisor also builds and supports a team of part-time staff who deliver afterschool programming at locations throughout the system, setting expectations, coaching in the moment, and creating a team culture where part-time staff feel prepared and connected to the larger work. Success in this role looks like strong relationships outside the building, programming that reflects the priorities in the Library's strategic plan, and a part-time team that delivers consistently across every location it serves. Community Engagement and Needs Assessment Build and maintain relationships with youth, families, and neighborhood organizations in the areas our branches serve. Assess community needs through direct conversation, observation, school and district contacts, participation data, and available community data. Identify gaps in afterschool access across the city and recommend where the Library is best positioned to help. Represent the Library at community meetings, school events, coalitions, and youth-serving networks. Incorporate youth and community voice into program design, including input from students themselves about what they want after school. Share findings with the Youth Development Manager and system leadership so community insight informs broader planning. Partnership Development Identify potential partners whose work benefits students, and work with the Youth Development Manager to evaluate fit against Library priorities and capacity. Cultivate partnerships with local organizations and groups, with support from the Youth Development Manager. Serve as the day-to-day contact for after school partners and keep those relationships healthy over time. Track partnership activity and outcomes, and recommend when to grow, adjust, or end a partnership. Coordinate with Marketing and Communications so partner programming is promoted well and reaches the intended students. Programming and Strategic Alignment Plan and deliver a coherent slate of afterschool programming across the system, grounded in community need and strategic plan priorities. Develop program models that can be run consistently by part-time staff at multiple locations. Pilot new approaches, evaluate honestly what worked, and share learning across the system. Work with Public Services managers to align programming with each location's space, schedule, and audience. Manage program supplies, materials, and assigned budget responsibly. Team Leadership and Development Recruit, hire, onboard, and train part-time after school staff in partnership with People and Culture. Supervise assigned part-time staff, providing clear expectations, regular coaching, feedback, and recognition. Build and manage staff schedules across locations so programming is reliably covered. Create a connected team culture for staff who work at different sites and on varied schedules, including regular team meetings and shared training. Support staff growth by identifying development opportunities and mentoring people who want to build a career in public libraries. Coordinate with People and Culture on hiring, performance, onboarding, and engagement, and apply expectations from Library policy and the employee handbook consistently. Participate in training identified by People and Culture to confidently handle performance and compliance processes. Model and actively cultivate a workplace culture rooted in the Library's values: We are inclusive. We are open. We are curious. We are playful. We are kind. Communication and Collaboration Maintain open, responsive communication with the Youth Development Manager, branch managers, and program staff. Participate in cross-departmental and cross-location meetings so after school work is coordinated with other Library services. Communicate clearly with partners, families, and students about schedules, expectations, and changes. Report regularly on community engagement, partnership development, program delivery, and outcomes. Student Safety and Well-Being Ensure staff understand and follow Library policy and safety protocols related to minors. Partner with Safety, Social Services, and Public Services teams to respond to incidents and support students in need. Debrief incidents and contribute to system-level learning and improvement. Professional Growth and Innovation Stay current on trends in youth development research, services, out-of-school-time learning, and community engagement. Promote a culture of curiosity, equity, and experimentation among staff. Participate in relevant conferences, committees, or community efforts to bring new ideas and relationships to SLCPL. Demonstrate and model the Library's values and culture in every aspect of your leadership. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. At least 3 years of experience in youth programming, out-of-school-time programs, education, community engagement, or a closely related field. At least 1 year of experience supervising, leading, or coordinating staff or volunteers. Demonstrated success building relationships and partnerships with schools, community organizations, or other external groups. Experience designing and delivering programs for school-age youth. Commitment to equity, representation, and belonging in staffing, program design, and decision-making. Demonstrated ability to create a healthy and positive work environment where open communication and collaboration thrive. Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work comfortably with students, families, partners, and colleagues from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Ability to use data, feedback, and observation to guide program improvements. Valid driver's license and insurance for traveling between Library locations and community sites. Preferred Qualifications Proficiency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken in our community. Experience in a public library, school district, or youth-serving nonprofit. Experience managing part-time or hourly staff across multiple locations. Familiarity with Positive Youth Development and community needs assessment methods. Experience with grant-funded or partner-funded programming. Working Environment Work is performed in library and community settings, with regular travel between locations. Frequent standing, walking, and moving program materials and supplies. Normal stress related to working in a busy, public institution. Schedule Full-time, 40 hours per week. Some evenings and weekends may be required to meet student needs. Other Information Completion of criminal background check will be required if the candidate is over eighteen (18) years of age. The City Library participates in the federal Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify). Employment is contingent upon confirmation of your employment eligibility through the E-verify system. The City Library is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to building a diverse workforce. #J-18808-Ljbffr SLC Public Library
