The Pharmacy Technician under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist assists in preparing and distributing medications; maintaining the drug inventory; and patient records. S/he is expected to perform some clerical duties relating to the department. The Pharmacy Apprentice receives and stores incoming supplies; verifies stock, and enters data into the computer to maintain inventory records. The Pharmacy Apprentice assists the Registered Pharmacist in his/her work within the framework of Pharmacy policies, procedures and protocols.

Qualifications:

Required Education:

• High school diploma or GED or the combination of education, knowledge, skills, mental development, and relevant experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position.
• Pharmacist Technician license in the state of Illinois.

Desirable Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacology or related field.

Required Experience:

A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a hospital in-patient pharmacy.

Desirable Experience:

A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a hospital in-patient pharmacy.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Procure and distribute medication orders per physicians’ requests or prearranged work assignments according to established policies and procedures.
• Consistently demonstrate knowledge and skills of physical, psychological, educational, and safety criteria related to patient medication cassettes.
• Maintain adequate stock of medication and supplies according to established policies and procedures.
• Fill prescriptions and be able to perform calculations and compounding under supervision of a pharmacist.
• Answer telephone promptly and courteously and identify self by name.
• Enter prescriptions in computer accurately and fill correctly in a reasonable amount of time.
• Ability to ring cash register and close out drawer correctly.
• Take care of waiting patients at the window promptly.
• Obtain current address, phone number, and allergies of the patient.
• Instruct patient to wait in the waiting area by the TV room. The wait time must be given and written on the prescription.
• Be honest with patients. Do not tell patients things you don’t know. Also do not tell patients to pick-up prescriptions when it is known that the pharmacist is on a break. Prescriptions can not be dispensed in the absence of a pharmacist.
• Call patients by name when prescriptions are ready and verify the address. Prescriptions may not be given to a minor.
• When employees come down to make a purchase, take care of them promptly. If it is a prescription, give them a waiting time.
• Follow procedures on prescriptions that need to be authorized by the Vice President of Patient Care Services, the Chief Nurse Officer, and/or Director of Human Resources.
• Do not accept or give out copies of prescriptions from other pharmacies or physicians.
• Assist in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations.
• Deliver and pick-up prescriptions from patients in the hospital and senior citizens’ building surrounding the hospital.
• Fill prescriptions daily.
• Communicate with patients and insurance companies for prior approvals.
• Be knowledgeable of what is inside the Pharmacy Department.
• Keep storeroom, pharmacy area, equipment, and supplies in order and assist in maintaining a clean and orderly department.
• Charge and credit patient medications.
• Log and add invoices as well as other paperwork.
• Rotate stocks to ensure that it is used before expiration. Remove and replace outdated medications.
• Know brand and generic names.
• File documentation in appropriate locations.
• Work collaboratively with all department personnel by maintaining an atmosphere of congeniality and cooperation.
• Implement treatment guidelines, protocols, formulary changes, and critical pathways as approved by P&T and other committees.
• Contribute to quality and effective operations of the Pharmacy Department.
• Maintain license and competency for position.
• Attend departmental meetings.
• Attend training sessions, seminars, and workshops appropriate for the acquisition of the necessary skills and information to enhance skills.
• Act in a consistently professional manner while conducting all duties and responsibilities.
• Comply with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security, fire, and infection control.
• Comply with all federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
