Qualified Craft Worker (HVACR) (37.5 Hour) #260611-6823TC-001

Position Overview The State of Connecticut Military Department (CTMD) is hiring a Qualified Craft Worker (HVACR) located at Bradley Air National Guard Base, 161 Rainbow Road, East Granby, CT 06026. The position is full‑time, Monday‑Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM (37.5 hours). Successful background investigation and EPA 608 certification may be required. Responsibilities Perform highly skilled HVACR tasks in accordance with trade practices and codes. Operate, maintain, repair, install, modify and assemble air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including units using Freon or chilled water. Determine cooling capacity for small areas and use psychometric charts. Control and measure air flow, room air changes, and room pressure. Monitor computerized control systems. Conduct minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks, and add water treatment chemicals to boilers. Prepare time and material estimates and obtain required materials for tasks. Maintain accurate shop records. Assist with related duties such as installing electrical or pneumatic controls, inspecting steam traps, removing pipe insulation, and acting as liaison with other units. Respond to fire and/or crash emergencies at state owned airports. Operate heavy equipment as required. Perform other duties as delegated by the appointing authority. Minimum Qualifications – General Experience Four (4) years of experience in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration trade tasks. Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience Two (2) years of the general experience must have involved skilled HVACR work. For state employees this is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2. Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma in a maintenance trade area can substitute for two (2) years of general experience. An acceptable completion of the UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may substitute for general and special experience. Two (2) years as a Qualified Craft Worker Trainee in a designated maintenance trade area can substitute. Experience performing HVACR duties on a military base, aircraft carrier, or large compound may substitute on a year‑for‑year basis. Preferred Qualifications Full range of licensed HVACR job duties. Current S1 or S2 license. Proficiency with HVACR materials, equipment, and repair methods. Strong communication skills in reporting HVACR duties to supervisors, managers, vendors, and inspectors. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including O365, Outlook, and Teams. Researching and preparing project scopes, vendor quotes, and invoices. Estimating materials and time for HVACR projects ranging from small repairs to multi‑month projects. Scheduling work and prioritizing duties. Willingness to travel statewide to support other locations. Special Requirements Possession of appropriate current licenses, permits, or certifications, including a State of Connecticut heating, piping, and/or cooling license, may be required. Additional licenses or certifications may be required as directed by the appointing authority. Physical and Working Conditions Physical ability to lift moderate to heavy weights, use protective equipment (respirators, safety goggles), and meet visual and auditory acuity requirements. Exposure to injury risk from equipment, extreme weather, or environmental conditions. Training in hazardous materials such as asbestos, PCB, PFAS, consistent with EPA guidelines may be required.
