Position Description (What you will do): The Hockaday School seeks an experienced and enthusiastic Head Rowing Coach to lead all aspects of its rowing program during the fall and spring rowing seasons, with an anticipated start date of August 3, 2026. Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Head Rowing Coach is responsible for the overall direction, administration, and development of the program, including planning and conducting practices, coaching student‑athletes during training and competition, and overseeing the day‑to‑day operations of the team. The successful candidate will possess substantial knowledge of rowing techniques, training methodologies, safety protocols, and competitive strategy. The Head Rowing Coach will foster a positive and inclusive team culture that promotes skill development, sportsmanship, personal growth, and a commitment to excellence. The coach is expected to create an environment in which each student‑athlete is treated with respect and dignity while encouraging teamwork, leadership, and a lifelong appreciation for the sport. The Head Rowing Coach will collaborate with the Athletics Department to support the mission and values of The Hockaday School and provide a rewarding athletic experience for all participants. Overseeing the Upper School Rowing programs, teams, and coaches Instructing athletes in the fundamental skills, strategies, and physical conditioning necessary for individual and team success Preparing, organizing and supervising all practices Organizing an initial team meeting each season to establish team rules, procedures, policies, and expectations Abiding by all school and US Rowing rules and policies Equipment upkeep and repairs Work with Athletic Operations to coordinate team travel Work with Dallas Rowing Club for practice space and storage Assign lineups and submit entries for all regattas Developing and establishing open communication with parents and athletes Submitting information to the Director of Athletics including, but not limited to, season results, inventory of equipment, award nominations, and program needs for the following season Driving teams and/or equipment to and from Hockaday and practices or competitions; must meet Hockaday’s requirements to be cleared to drive (does not require a CDL) Other duties as assigned We’re excited about you because you have... High school diploma, bachelor’s degree preferred At least three years of experience in coaching rowing, or similar relevant experience Trailer driving required (previous experience preferable but not required) Basic understanding and ability to use computers and technology including (e.g., Microsoft Windows and Office products, basic office equipment, etc.) Well‑developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with all constituents in a school environment, including students, co‑workers, parents, alumnae, volunteers, and the public Adaptability, honesty, self‑reliance, teamwork, dependability, flexibility, willingness to listen and learn, work ethic, determination, persistence, problem‑solving skills, loyalty, and congeniality are essential Must successfully complete background screening and verification through Hockaday and US Rowing Must have the ability to work in a school environment through satisfactory completion of all legally required and School‑required background and screening checks and verifications, including criminal and sex offender background checks. Regularly works in outdoors in varying weather conditions and climate Regularly uses close and distance vision, ability to observe students from various distances Ability to move in a manner that provides effective demonstration of movements required in the sport of rowing Ability to regularly move rowing equipment to and from storage facilities and/or vehicles Sometimes works in a stressful environment, effectively dealing with a diverse array of contacts; stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions, particularly with respect to adequate supervision and safety of student athletes Ability to frequently work flexible hours to support before or after‑school practices and other weekend events as scheduled for the season Abilityto maintain appropriate boundaries with students, fellow staff and community members In this role, you will.... Participate in all requisite School trainings prior to the start of the school, and throughout the School year.
