Job Overview Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Fire Protection Engineer to work in our Environmental, Safety, Health and Quality department. The position is onsite with a 4x10 work schedule located at the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) facility with Fridays off. The Fire Protection Engineer reports to the MFC Occupational Safety and Health Manager and will develop Fire Hazard Analysis for nuclear facilities, participate in design reviews for new facilities and modifications, review work control documents with advanced Fire Protection solutions, and provide fire protection support and expertise to MFC. Responsibilities Perform Fire Hazard Analysis and Facility Assessments for operations, processes, facilities, and structures, including fire dynamics calculations and professional judgment to determine fire/smoke spread and control; analyze fire protection systems for adequacy of fire control; analyze Life Safety Code for evacuation adequacy; ensure compliance with DOE orders, NFPA, IBC, IFC, Idaho and city codes; interact with state, city, and DOE officials as required. Participate in the identification, analysis, and mitigation of Fire Protection related hazards associated with work organization design, operations, and maintenance using comprehensive knowledge of Fire Protection engineering principles; review work control documents to ensure appropriate incorporation of Fire Protection theories and principles for hazard mitigation controls. Determine and develop approaches to deficiencies with innovative and practical solutions. Provide input and direction to laboratory level fire protection related performance measures, reports, and assessments. Maintain professional qualifications, including the INL Fire Protection Qualification; stay up to date with new developments in fire protection; maintain relationships of trust with co‑workers and customers. Review design activities for new or modified systems, structures, and components to ensure fire protection criteria are identified and included in design criteria documents, incorporated in designs, and verified through required acceptance testing; approve fire protection system impairments/outages and establish required compensatory measures; coordinate impairment closure with the INL Fire Marshal. Conduct fire protection engineering surveys and prepare corrective actions or suggested improvement reports for deficiencies, including cost estimates. Participate in the development of budgets related to fire protection equipment and projects. Minimum Requirements Level 2: Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering Technology, or related engineering technology or field from an ABET‑accredited program and 2 years fire protection experience, or a Master’s Degree in fire protection or related engineering field. Level 3: Bachelor’s Degree in the same fields from an ABET‑accredited program and 5 years experience, or a Master’s Degree and 2 years experience. Must obtain and maintain a Department of Energy “L” clearance; US citizenship required. Preferred Qualifications PE License in Fire Protection. Job Information Pay range: Level 2 ($79,344 – $162,732) / Level 3 ($95,256 – $195,288). Compensation decisions are based on education, relevant experience, and other credentials. TDP: This is a testing designated position; a pre‑employment drug screen and periodic drug testing are required. Multi‑level posting: candidate will be placed at the appropriate level based on experience and skills. Physical Requirements Frequent standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, and operating equipment. Hand/finger dexterity for keyboard, material handling, tool use, and reaching. Drives a vehicle. Occasionally lifts or moves up to 50 pounds. Requires adequate visual acuity and hearing; reasonable accommodations may be made.
