Must be able to work independently/hit the ground running! Nurses prepare patients by verifying orders, identifying patients, performing skin prep, and correctly placing ECG electrodes to obtain accurate tracings. Telemetry RNs initiate and maintain monitoring, set alarm limits, and continuously assess vital signs and cardiac rhythms. They interpret EKGs, promptly respond to alarms, distinguish true events from artifacts, and document findings and interventions in the EHR. Responsibilities also include administering cardiac medications, assisting with emergency responses and procedures such as cardioversion, and providing close pre- and post-procedure monitoring. Patient and family education on telemetry equipment, safety, and fall prevention is essential, along with troubleshooting and maintaining monitoring equipment to ensure patient safety.Unit DescriptionAn RN in a Telemetry unit cares for patients who require continuous cardiac monitoring but do not need ICU-level care. Using ECG and vital sign monitoring systems, telemetry nurses track heart rhythms and detect early signs of cardiac instability. They interpret EKG strips, respond to alarms, administer medications and treatments, and provide rapid intervention during cardiac events. Telemetry RNs commonly care for post-cardiac procedure patients and those with heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke. The unit serves as a step-down from ICU or step-up from medical-surgical floors, requiring strong assessment skills, quick clinical judgment, and ongoing patient and family education for recovery and discharge.
