Job Description

The Maintenance and Engineering Manager leads the maintenance and engineering functions to ensure the facility and production equipment are properly designed, maintained, and operated to safely perform specified tasks in a cost-effective manner. This role oversees capital project identification and execution, preventive maintenance programs, equipment reliability, and facility integrity, while ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements. The position provides strategic direction, technical expertise, and hands-on leadership to optimize equipment utilization, reduce downtime, and support continuous improvement across the plant.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and direction for the plant’s maintenance and engineering functions, with a strong focus on preventive maintenance, equipment reliability, and cost-effective operation.
• Develop and implement maintenance strategies that maximize equipment utilization, minimize downtime, and support safe, efficient production.
• Identify, justify, and execute capital projects and major maintenance activities, including need definition, technical specifications, vendor evaluation, and project management through completion.
• Monitor machine performance, repair history, and downtime trends to plan and execute effective preventive and predictive maintenance activities.
• Manage the maintenance stockroom inventory to ensure availability of critical parts while controlling costs and optimizing inventory levels.
• Directly supervise maintenance mechanics, a controls technician, and an engineer, providing day-to-day leadership, work prioritization, and technical guidance.
• Serve as the subject matter expert for electrical, mechanical, and basic PLC systems, supporting troubleshooting, repairs, and continuous improvement of equipment and processes.
• Perform full supervisory responsibilities, including recruiting, hiring, coaching, counseling, discipline, performance appraisals, promotions, and goal setting for maintenance personnel.
• Develop, justify, and manage the departmental operating budget, ensuring costs remain within approved limits and align with overall business objectives.
• Understand and apply the relationship between equipment performance, maintenance activities, capital projects, and overall cost of goods sold.
• Lead and support initiatives in energy management, waste minimization, vibration analysis, process and machine troubleshooting, failure analysis, and equipment design, fabrication, and installation.
• Ensure the physical facility is maintained in a safe, functional, and cost-effective condition to support production and other plant activities.
• Ensure all equipment meets required safety characteristics and complies with applicable regulations and standards from agencies such as OSHA and NFPA, as well as insurance and industrial safety requirements.
• Monitor environmental discharges such as air emissions, noise, and sewer effluents to ensure appropriate permits are in place and all emissions remain within prescribed limits.
• Interface with other plant departments to identify, justify, and execute projects that improve safety, reduce manufacturing costs, increase productivity, and enhance the repair and reliability of equipment and facilities.
• Serve as the plant’s engineering expert, advising plant management, departmental leaders, line supervisors, and other personnel on equipment design, functioning, and process improvements.
• Collaborate with production, quality, and technical service teams to improve process performance through justified equipment modifications and changes.
• Support corporate and centralized functions such as R&D, Purchasing, and Central Engineering by providing insights into equipment capabilities and limitations as they relate to product and process requirements.
• Design and implement administrative systems that improve maintenance and engineering effectiveness and address organizational functional issues.
• Prepare clear, concise technical reports, letters, and memoranda to document projects, issues, and recommendations.
• Deliver effective oral presentations and communications to employees and management regarding maintenance plans, projects, performance, and initiatives.
• Ensure compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements related to personnel practices, environmental regulations, safety, and vendor contracts.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support plant operations, safety, and continuous improvement.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience in maintenance management and supervision within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
• Demonstrated ability to manage and lead maintenance technicians, including a controls technician and an engineer, with responsibility for their development and performance.
• Strong knowledge of engineering principles and fundamentals, including hydraulics, pneumatics, thermodynamics, and electronics.
• Hands-on experience with pumping equipment, including centrifugal and positive displacement pumps.
• Experience with capital project justification processes and the ability to develop, evaluate, and present business cases for projects.
• Functional understanding of hourly payroll systems and hourly personnel practices.
• Knowledge of basic industrial engineering concepts and their application to maintenance and production efficiency.
• Understanding of business finance and accounting concepts, particularly as they relate to maintenance costs and overall manufacturing performance.
• Demonstrated leadership, motivation, and personnel management skills, including planning and directing work, developing staff, and managing performance.
• Working knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements from agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, Clean Air regulations, sewer discharge requirements, OSHA, and NFPA.
• Basic understanding of general business principles, including marketing, sales, and cost accounting, and how they interact with operations and maintenance.
• Basic understanding of business law as it relates to vendor contracts and service agreements.
• Strong work prioritization skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks under time and cost constraints.
• Effective public speaking and oral communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear, concise presentations to employees and management.
• Proficiency with computers and common business software, including Microsoft Office and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
• Experience using computer-aided design (CAD) tools and related engineering software.
• Strong written communication skills, with the ability to prepare grammatically correct, concise technical reports, letters, and memoranda.
• Demonstrated ability to design and implement administrative systems to solve organizational and functional problems.
• Experience in departmental management, including budget development, tracking, goal setting, and resource justification.
• Bachelor’s degree required.

• Experience managing development programs or competency passports for maintenance personnel.
• Familiarity with energy management and waste minimization practices in an industrial setting.
• Exposure to vibration analysis, failure analysis, and advanced troubleshooting techniques for process and machine issues.
• Experience with equipment design, fabrication, and installation projects in a production environment.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with tight time and cost constraints.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including production, quality, R&D, purchasing, and corporate engineering.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when managing multiple projects and priorities.
• Capability to remain calm and effective in stressful situations, particularly during emergencies or critical equipment failures.

Work Environment

Core hours for this role are typically 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., within a manufacturing facility that operates 24 hours per day and may run on weekends. Because the plant runs continuously, many projects and major repairs are scheduled during weekends or off-hours to avoid interfering with production. The position requires occasional weekend and holiday work, as well as presence on-site during off-hours when emergencies occur or when personnel need technical support. Routine work beyond a standard 40-hour week is expected, typically totaling about 50 to 55 hours per week. The role includes on-call responsibilities to respond to plant emergencies and critical equipment issues. The environment can be fast-paced and time-sensitive, with tight time and cost constraints that may create stressful situations. You will work in and around production equipment, utilities, and facility systems, using tools such as CMMS, CAD software, and standard office applications to plan, track, and document maintenance and engineering activities.

The pay range for this position is $104000.00 - $185000.00/yr.
