The Echocardiogram Supervisor is responsible for supervising cardiac and vascular sonographers, and students, assisting with competency and educational activities for cardiovascular imaging personnel, is involved with quality assessment of invasive and non-invasive imaging and assists with strategic planning. The Supervisor is involved with hiring, training, performance management, and staff development. The Supervisor functions as a liaison between providers, staff, and patients, explaining departmental policies and procedures, resolving problems, and coordinating activities. Collaboration with other departments and leadership to ensure standards for productivity, patient care, employee performance, cost effectiveness, and customer satisfaction are met all while continuing to perform more complex ultrasound imaging procedures. This position is responsible for the oversight and coordination of daily operations with the main emphasis on high quality patient care which adheres to the guidelines and technical standards set forth by the accrediting body and organization. This position emphasizes proficiency and expertise in the technical aspects of Invasive and Non-Invasive Cardiovascular Imaging and has a focus on quality and resource management. The Supervisor is a multi-skilled allied health professional who may perform Cardiac and Vascular imaging procedures and oversees training of staff. The supervisor ensures proper equipment use and inventory management to ensure patient safety and financial responsibility requirements remain top priorities. Inventory oversight and collaboration with the IT team to ensure PAC’s functionality which is essential for imaging and reporting.  Works with the Medical Director to assure program goals and protocols are met.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Complies with Augusta Health and departmental policies and procedures including employee’s handbook, safety guidelines, quality improvement and infection control in accordance with organizational vision and philosophy.
  • Annually reviews policy and procedure for fire/safety, code blue, disaster, and hazardous materials to assure safety of co-workers, patients, family/significant other, and self in the non-invasive vascular lab environment.
  • Maintains Echo and Vascular lab accreditation status requirements and ensures that all QA/QI activities are performed timely by the providers.
  • Reviews staffing schedule daily. Reviews patient schedule to maintain adequate and timely access to vascular procedures
  • Attends planned staff meetings-attendance is documented in staff meeting minutes.
  • Collaborates as appropriate with the patient, physician, family/significant other, and other health team members to identify age specific problems/needs. Communicates pertinent information to health team members.
  • Maintains all patient records with accurate documentation and appropriate communication of data collected from all Vascular/Echo Lab testing-accurate reports are filed in patient record in a timely manner.
  • Prepares the patient for testing by demonstrating for the patient, the proper procedures to follow follows established guidelines from preparation of the patient.
  • Maintains payroll, PTO and time and attendance for echo and vascular team members
  • Responsible for charge reconciliation and billing for echo and vascular procedures.
  • Supports community service outreach programs for echo and vascular access and growth.
  • Uses and maintains equipment per departmental policy and procedure, to ensure test quality, patient safety, and to prevent downtime interference with service provision.
  • Performs peripheral vascular and echocardiogram testing (within scope of practice/licensure) per physician order, adhering to established departmental policy and procedure.
  • Assists Director with planning, implementation, and evaluation of service objectives, capital and minor equipment needs as directed.
  • Follows hospital policy and procedures in emergency situations.
  • Monitors work performance for accuracy and completeness to ensure compliance with established standards. Maintains communications with immediate supervisor and/or physician and seeks assistance when circumstances do not allow independent action.
  • Evidenced by observation, feedback from physicians, and QI measures.
  • Orders and maintains supplies-needed supplies are available in the department.
  • Contributes to the formulation and implementation of Vascular policies and procedures when requested by department director. Maintain policy and procedure manual
  • Respects the dignity and confidentiality of the patient. Serves as an advocate as necessary and provides a safe, secure environment for the patient-adheres to established hospital policies including confidentiality and patient rights.
  • Promotes harmonious relationships and positive attitudes among the health care team as evidenced by positive commendation and lack of complaints.
  • Reviews appointment schedules and suggests changes necessary to provide maximum use of the available resources (re: equipment and staff) in order to ensure the most efficient service to the patients and physicians-consistently reviews the appointment schedule for the day and assists the supervisor in making necessary adjustments to maximize resource efficiency.
  • Evaluate the daily schedule and determine priority patients and coordinate exams within the department consistently reviews the daily appointment schedule and determines the appropriate prioritization of patients to be done in an efficient manner.
  • Initiates equipment service calls when problems develop as indicated-whenever necessary, ensures prompt follow-up is completed with regard to contacting the service representative for any problems or downtime of the equipment (i.e. ultrasound scanning units).
  • Stays knowledgeable of new updates and changes of ultrasound scanning. Knowledgeable through reference reading material-assumes responsibility for maintaining knowledge base for assigned area. Attends meetings, seminars, etc. for continuing education and reads any reference materials when requested to stay abreast of current updates.
  • Take Echo call on a rotating basis-always assumes call responsibility when assigned as needed.
  • Notifies the Cardiovascular Business Manager or Administrative Director of any patient occurrences or injuries and fills out the proper forms as needed-whenever needed, due to any injuries or serious occurrences, always reports same to their supervisor and completes the required documentation.
  • Utilizes good body mechanics and safe mobility modalities-always uses good techniques and mechanics to avoid possible injury.
  • Explains procedures to patients prior to and during exams-always explains procedures to assigned patients, as appropriate.
  • The individual possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age, specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the departmental policies and procedures.
  • May be tasked with being a liaison between the organization and local colleges to help facilitate Echo Tech training at Augusta Health.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required:

  • Associate's degree – Allied Health or Applied Science (accredited cardiac sonographer program) required.
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree preferred.
  • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS), or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS), or Advanced Cardiac Registered (ACS), or Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT), or Registered Vascular Sonographer or both.

    • or the ability to obtain one of these registries within 12 months of employment.
  • BLS required.
