Probation Supervisor

Responsibilities Supervise assigned probation unit staff, including planning, prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; coordinating staff training; and implementing hiring, discipline, and termination procedures. Manage and direct day‑to‑day probation operations and functions for the assigned specialized unit; ensure conformance to work standards, operating procedures, and system policies. Conduct presentence/predisposition reports and/or supervise an active caseload in accordance with system rules and regulations. Train probation staff within a specialized unit, district field service division or satellite office, in practices, policies and procedures associated with the supervision and investigation of offenders, and monitor their compliance with system standards. Evaluate lower‑level staff case plans and intervention strategies; ensure a standard of quality and compliance in approved strategies; provide guidance to lower‑level staff regarding challenging or unique cases. Perform other related duties of a similar nature or level. Qualifications Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences, criminal justice, or related fields; and 7 years’ experience working in a probation system or related organization; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of customer service principles; supervisory principles; criminal justice system, laws, legal codes, and court procedures; interview and assessment procedures and practices; intervention policies and procedures; signs of abuse, mental health issues, or neglect; crisis intervention techniques; document review techniques; computers and related software applications. Skills in providing customer service; evaluating work for quality, accuracy, and completion; cognitive restructuring; performing interviews; maintaining records and files; utilizing probation and protective techniques; applying applicable laws, rules and regulations; preparing activity reports and updating databases; operating computers and applicable software applications; utilizing communication and interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public. Physical requirements: light work – exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, up to 10 pounds frequently; sensitivity to environmental threats, odors, dust, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, and travel. All educational credits must be from an accredited institution approved by the U.S. Department of Education.
