Overview Provides care in a medical practice office or clinic under the direction of a provider. Maintains a clean and safe environment, delivers patient care, and offers patients information. Responsibilities Proactively assists patients throughout the visit and accompanies them to the exam/procedure room. Performs clerical activities related to patient care such as scheduling appointments and diagnostic imaging exams, lab callbacks, prior authorizations, retrieving medical histories, filling out patient paperwork, and answering phone calls. Collects and records patient data including height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration rate, blood pressure, and basic health information; records pertinent medical information, surgical history, reviews systems, past medical history, social history, and allergies. Assists with physical examination preparations. Performs EKGs, removes sutures/staples, and changes sterile and non‑sterile dressings as directed. Collects and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis using non‑invasive techniques such as urine, sputum, and stool. Assists with patient undressing, cleansing, and positioning for specific procedures. Conducts skin tests and venipuncture for blood withdrawal. Administers medication and immunizations under the direction of the physician or advanced practice provider. May authorize prescription refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies authorized by a physician or advanced practice provider. Administers first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an emergency. Prepares and cleans exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; ensures instruments are properly sterilized and contaminated supplies are disposed. Prepares orders, sorts, stores, and restocks supplies for the exam/procedure room; orders and maintains stock of supplies as needed. Provides patient education and instructions under the authorization of the supervising physician. Performs other duties as assigned or requested. Education and Training Requirements Required – High School Diploma or Equivalent. Preferred – Technical Degree or Diploma in Medical Assistant. Work Experience Requirements Required – Medical Assistant or similar with 3–5 years of experience. Licenses and Certifications Requirements Required – HEARTSAVER – American Heart Association. Required – NCCT Medical Assistant – National Center for Competency Testing. Preferred – AMT Registered Medical Assistant – American Medical Technologists. Preferred – Certified Clinical Medical Assistant – National Healthcareer Association. Preferred – Nationally Certified Medical Assistant – National Association of Health Professionals. Preferred – AAMA Certified Medical Assistant – The American Association of Medical Assistants. Preferred – BASIC LIFE SUPPORT – American Heart Association. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact tactfully with patients, families, and physicians. Successfully completes competency assessments and skill checklists for Level 2, demonstrating proficiency in all measured areas. Initiates patient visits with eye contact, a smile, greeting, and by using the patient’s name. Works independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team; completes assigned training and development programs within the mandated timeframe. Proficient in computer skills with successful navigation of the EMR and documentation; reviews computer reports following evidence‑based guidelines. Demonstrates proficiency in motivational interviewing and teach‑back methods. Act quickly in emergency situations. Supervision There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this position. Physical Demands May include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion. Requires good balance and coordination. Medium work: can exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and up to 25 lbs. of force frequently. Requires close visual acuity (color, depth perception, and field of vision) to perform tasks such as assessing patients, preparing data, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading.
