COBOL Mainframe Developer

Insight Global is seeking a COBOL Mainframe Developer for a top enterprise client operating in a legacy-heavy environment undergoing modernization. This candidate will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing mission-critical mainframe applications while supporting integration with modern web technologies. The ideal candidate brings deep COBOL expertise along with exposure to modern front-end frameworks such as React, Angular, and HTML5, enabling seamless collaboration across legacy and digital platforms. This role offers the opportunity to work in a fully remote setting while supporting on-prem infrastructure, playing a key role in the client's digital transformation journey.

Day-to-Day:
• Develop, maintain, and enhance COBOL-based mainframe applications
• Support integration efforts between mainframe backends and modern web UI (React/Angular)
• Write and optimize SQL queries for backend data processing
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues in production and QA environments
• Assist with modernization efforts bridging legacy and distributed systems
• Perform code reviews, testing, and technical documentation
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams supporting on-prem systems remotely

Required Skills & Experience
• Strong experience with Mainframe Programming (COBOL)
• Hands-on development in legacy mainframe environments
• Experience with SQL backend/database development
• Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills in production environments
• Experience with JCL, batch processing, and mainframe utilities
• Ability to support on-prem infrastructure remotely


Nice to Have Skills & Experience
• Experience with modern front-end technologies (React, Angular, HTML5)
• Exposure to full-stack or hybrid development environments (mainframe + web apps)
• Experience integrating mainframe systems with modern UI frameworks
• Strong SQL optimization and performance tuning experience
• Familiarity with API development or middleware connecting legacy systems to web apps
• Experience supporting or contributing to legacy modernization initiatives
• Knowledge of Agile environments or DevOps practices (CI/CD for hybrid systems)
• Industry experience in financial services, insurance, or enterprise legacy environments
