Operating Room Technician

Assists in meeting the total care needs and requirements of the operating room patient by performing designated activities. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Key Accountabilities/Competency

1. Demonstrates the ability to prioritize and complete work assignments.

2. Demonstrates a cooperative relationship in order to effectively perform assignments.

3. Acts as a professional role model.

4. Assists in transferring/positioning patients under direct supervision; Holds limbs for surgical prep under direct supervision of the RN; Assists with the preparation of preoperative site and patient draping.

5. Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of surgery suites, sterile rooms and ancillary rooms, as well as, assisting with room turnover. Demonstrates understanding and indications of cleaning solutions and required contact time.

6. Obtains necessary equipment and positioning supplies needed for cases and ensures all scheduled cases have complete case carts. Ensures age specific supplies and equipment are available.

7. Checks, cleans and restocks surgical suites, sterile rooms and ancillary rooms. Returns equipment and supplies to appropriate location.

8. Maintains communication with assigned rooms, clinical coordinators, and control desk charge nurse.

9. Performs activities required during the operation (e.g. handling of instruments, sponges, sutures, catheters, drains, dressing, etc.) under direct supervision. Observes for and corrects breaks in aseptic technique. Assists the physician, within scope of practice, during procedures as necessary. Demonstrates aseptic technique while tying, snapping surgical gowns and movement in OR suite. Maintains aseptic technique while opening supplies

10. Tests operation efficiency of equipment prior to and after each case, reporting any problem to the Clinical Specialty Coordinator or circulating nurse.

11. Sprays instruments with solution to aid in breakdown of bioburden prior to returning instruments to Sterile Processing.

12. Performs sponge, instrument, and sharps counts per policy. Performs instrument inventory counts on closed cavity cases. Disposes of sharps appropriately.

13. Cross trains to the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) as needed.

14. Demonstrates the ability to operate autoclave and rapid readout. Document both in appropriate logs.

15. Handles laboratory specimens correctly.

16. Performs point of use cleaning on instruments and scopes. Terminally disinfects ultrasound probe.

17. Answers intercom pages promptly and courteously responds to needs.

18. Makes appropriate decisions utilizing evidence-based practice and demonstrates critical thinking skills.

19. Responsible for on-call coverage.

Minimum Education, Experience, Training, and Licensures Required: Associates or Vocational degree from an accredited Surgical Technical program. BCLS required. CST certification by NBSTSA. (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) required. EXPERIENCE: One-year experience as a Certified Surgical Technician (CST) is preferred.

Working Conditions: Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. Exposed to confined spaces, chemicals, moderate levels of noise, low vibration, and blood and body fluids. Requires wearing gloves, mask, body protection, and eye protection. Requires standing and walking more than 75% of the time. Requires sitting less than 25% of the time. Requires carrying, pushing, pulling, and lifting objects weighing up to 25 pounds more than 35% but less than 75% of the time. Requires climbing and balancing less than 35% of the time. Requires bending, twisting, reaching, fingering, grasping, and feeling more than 75% of the time. Requires crawling, squatting, and kneeling more than 35% but less than 75% of the time. Requires talking, hearing, and seeing more than 75% of the time. Requires making repetitive motions using wrists, hand, and fingers more than 75% of the time. Requires pushing objects weighing over 150 pounds (e.g. patients) more than 35% but less than 75% of the time.

36 hours per week- Most likely 4 nine-hour shifts per week= 36 hours.

Variable shifts. Minimal weeknight and weekend call.
