Job Details Job Location: Homewood, IL 60430 Position Type: Part Time Education Level: Not Specified Salary Range: $15.00 - $17.00 Hourly Travel Percentage: None Job Shift: Any Job Summary Under the supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator and Fitness Operations Supervisor, the lifeguard is responsible for performing a variety of duties to prepare the pool for the demands of the group present. The lifeguard works part‑time, teaching swim lessons each week during the Fall, Winter, and Spring sessions, and must also be willing to pick up shifts for birthday parties, Family Swim, and private lessons. The H‑F Park District’s mission is to enhance the quality of life through diverse recreational opportunities, facilities, and parks while caring for the environment. The lifeguard is required to participate in monthly in‑service training to demonstrate knowledge or ability to perform work activities. The lifeguard reports directly to the Aquatics Coordinator. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Provide outstanding customer service to internal and external guests. Protect the safety of swimmers. Maintain attention on swimmers at all times while on duty. Enforce all pool rules in the water, on the deck, and in locker rooms. Perform emergency procedures and first aid as necessary. Attend required staff meetings. Keep the deck and water free of debris and unused equipment. Set up equipment or put it away, including toys and lane lines, and keep the deck tidy. Substitute for fellow staff members when needed. Check safety equipment at the beginning of each shift. Complete accident reports after rendering first aid; notify the Club Manager and Fitness Operations Supervisor for serious incidents. Fully understand emergency procedures, pool rules, rescue techniques, and minor first aid, and demonstrate them when required. Always wear the issued lifeguard staff t‑shirt, suit, fanny pack with proper PPE, sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, and whistle while on duty. Read and follow Park District policies. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Aquatics Coordinator and Fitness Operations Supervisor related to swim lessons, the pool, and its operation. Maintain all required skills and skill test competencies associated with certification. Adhere to all policies and procedures outlined in the Aquatic Safety Manual. Complete all duties assigned as a Swim Instructor, including training participation, class instruction, greeting participants and families, taking attendance, and filling out report cards. Perform any other related job duties as assigned. COGNITIVE SKILLS REQUIRED Follow directions from supervisors and co‑workers. Give directions to co‑workers. Use good safety awareness and judgment. JOB SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS Must be at least 16 years old. Must have or be able to obtain a current CPR/AED/First‑Aid Certification. Must have or be able to obtain current lifeguard training through StarGuard (Red Cross or Ellis and Associates certification acceptable for crossover training). Be able to swim 50 yards without stopping, swim 50 yards with a rescue tube across the chest, tread water for one minute without using hands, and retrieve a 10‑lb brick from the bottom of a 5‑ft deep pool. Be punctual, responsible, honest, and trustworthy. Communicate with the public and fellow staff courteously, state rules firmly and diplomatically. Represent the Park District professionally in appearance and conduct. Maintain good personal hygiene and behavior habits. EDUCATION AND TRAINING Obtain a current StarGuard Lifeguard Certification. Current StarGuard lifeguard certification or comparable certification is strongly preferred.
