Senior Biologist On-Call

We are seeking an experienced Senior Biologist to provide expert biological support on an on-call basis. The role will involve responding to urgent operational, environmental, or scientific requirements, assessing available information, and providing clear recommendations within agreed response times. You will work across a range of situations, coordinating with technical teams, field personnel, contractors, and relevant stakeholders to support safe, compliant, and scientifically robust outcomes.


Key responsibilities will include reviewing biological data and technical reports; undertaking or overseeing field assessments, surveys, sampling, and monitoring activities; identifying potential ecological risks; and advising on appropriate mitigation measures. You may be required to interpret legislation, permits, policies, and industry standards, prepare concise technical notes, and contribute to incident investigations or regulatory reporting. The role may also involve reviewing methodologies, quality-checking outputs, mentoring less experienced biologists, and maintaining accurate records of advice and decisions. Flexibility is essential, as on-call work may require availability outside standard hours and occasional travel to operational or field locations.


Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline, together with substantial professional experience in biological assessment or environmental consultancy. A strong understanding of relevant ecological principles, survey techniques, environmental legislation, and risk management is required. Experience working in regulated, industrial, infrastructure, conservation, or emergency-response environments would be advantageous. You will need excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills, sound professional judgment, and the ability to remain calm and decisive when working under time pressure. The successful candidate will be organised, collaborative, safety-conscious, and comfortable working independently while escalating issues appropriately. Current professional certifications, licences, or specialist species knowledge may be required depending on operational needs.
