Perinatal Nurse

Job Description

The Perinatal Nurse provides professional nursing care to patients in the Labor and Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum, and Nursery units. This role involves utilizing established policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure safe and effective care. Responsibilities include performing antenatal testing, monitoring maternal and neonatal wellbeing during labor, and delivering individualized care tailored to each patient's unique situation to promote a positive birthing experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive assessments of patients throughout the labor and delivery process.
• Monitor maternal and neonatal wellbeing and respond to non-reassuring fetal heart rates according to established standards.
• Administer safe and accurate medication as per departmental protocols.
• Provide postpartum care and education based on individualized patient needs.
• Conduct newborn assessments and provide care in accordance with departmental standards.
• Coordinate care activities with multidisciplinary team members.
• Maintain department readiness by performing necessary tasks such as restocking supplies and ensuring equipment functionality.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and policy development.

Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited nursing program.
• Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
• A minimum of 2 years of recent perinatal nursing experience required; 5 years preferred.
• Active California RN license in good standing required prior to start date.
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; NRP and fetal heart monitoring validation preferred.
• Knowledge of electronic medical record documentation and compliance with patient safety standards.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written; bilingual abilities are a plus.

• Ability to assess and provide nursing care for high-risk patients and manage complications of pregnancy.
• Strong critical thinking skills to prioritize patient needs in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to educate patients and their families on care plans and health management.
• Demonstrated teamwork and adaptability to changing situations.

Physical Demands

• Frequent walking, standing, sitting, and communication with patients and team members.
• Occasional lifting and moving of patients up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work in environments with exposure to biological and hazardous substances.

Working Conditions

• Routine hospital and administrative environments with contact with patients under various circumstances.
• Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious diseases.
• Regular response to emergency situations requiring immediate action.

Essential Functions

• Provide exceptional nursing care while maintaining patient safety and comfort.
• Document patient assessments and care provided accurately in electronic medical records.
• Engage actively in shared governance and departmental meetings to enhance patient care services.
• Assist with procedures and collaborate effectively with physicians and other healthcare providers.
• Assist in training and orienting new nursing staff as needed.
