Phlebotomist II Inpatient Hospital Setting
This role provides high-quality phlebotomy services in an inpatient hospital environment, focusing on accurate specimen collection, exceptional patient care, and strict adherence to laboratory and safety protocols. The phlebotomist greets patients, performs blood draws and other specimen collections, processes and stores specimens according to established procedures, and supports the laboratory with documentation, billing, and customer service tasks. This position requires strong technical phlebotomy skills, attention to detail, and a patient-first mindset in a fast-paced clinical setting.
Responsibilities
- Greet patients as they arrive in the laboratory and provide a professional, courteous, and reassuring experience.
- Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles, butterfly needles, syringes, and other appropriate equipment.
- Collect a variety of specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, following established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
- Label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by the specific test order.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport, following specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity during handling and shipping.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes.
- Follow all procedures outlined by specific protocols to preserve specimen quality and ensure reliable test results.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control policies.
- Attend and complete required annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and regulations.
- Answer telephone calls professionally, respond to inquiries, and read laboratory results as appropriate.
- Update patient information accurately in the system and ensure proper documentation of all procedures performed.
- Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and support general laboratory upkeep and cleanliness.
- Prepare collection sites appropriately prior to specimen collection, ensuring safe and hygienic conditions.
- Handle insurance and billing-related tasks associated with laboratory services as needed.
- Process samples from collection through final preparation for testing or transport, maintaining chain of custody where required.
- Provide excellent customer service to patients, clinicians, and other stakeholders, maintaining a patient-first mindset.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting and contribute to a positive team environment.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 1 year of phlebotomy and venipuncture experience in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and blood drawing using straight needles, butterfly needles, syringes, and related equipment.
- Hands-on experience with blood collection, blood cultures, and other specimen collection such as urine and fecal samples.
- Strong phlebotomy skills, including accurate labeling, handling, and processing of specimens.
- Ability to match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify information with a high degree of accuracy.
- Experience with centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and preparing specimens according to test requirements.
- Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to comply with all safety and infection control standards.
- Previous customer service experience in any setting, with a demonstrated commitment to patient-first care.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation, communication, and data entry tasks.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Proven reliability and strong attendance record in previous roles.
- Ability to take feedback well and demonstrate eagerness to learn and improve.
- Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to take initiative.

Work Environment
This position is based in an inpatient hospital laboratory located at a medical center in Portland, Oregon. The role operates within a fast-paced clinical environment where phlebotomists work closely with patients, nurses, physicians, and laboratory staff. The schedule options typically include either a 1:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. shift or a 4:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. shift, working four shifts per week with rotating work every third weekend. The role is structured as a 3-month contract with a strong likelihood of extension, often ranging from 6 to 9 months in total, with potential (but not guaranteed) opportunities to transition to a direct role based on business needs and individual performance and attendance. The work involves frequent use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, syringes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, and requires strict adherence to safety, OSHA, and DEP regulations.
