Assistant Professor of Practice - Aural Skills/Music Theory - #T10137 The Western Carolina University School of Music invites applications for a full‑time, nine‑month, fixed‑term Assistant Professor of Practice appointment in Aural Skills and Music Theory, anticipated to begin on August 1, 2026. The position will be based on campus in Cullowhee, NC. Responsibilities Teach undergraduate theory and musicianship courses, including aural skills and music theory, within the music education, commercial music, and performance degree programs. Engage students of diverse backgrounds and maintain inclusive teaching practices. Collaborate with faculty and staff on student recruitment, retention, and academic support activities. Fulfill service responsibilities as expected of School of Music faculty, such as advising, committee work, and other departmental duties. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Earned doctorate in Music Theory, Music, or a closely related field. ABD candidates will be considered, but the degree must be completed before the start of Fall 2026. At least two years of experience teaching undergraduate aural skills and/or music theory. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students and colleagues from a broad range of backgrounds. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Preferred Qualifications: Commitment to preparing students for the contemporary demands of the evolving music profession. Keyboard proficiency for applied skills such as sight‑reading, reading harmonic chord progressions, and score reading.
