Consumer Debt Defense Attorney – Minnesota

Employment Type: Part-time independent-contractor opportunity

Compensation: Flat fee per accepted and completed covered matter. Typical covered debt-defense fees range from $150 to $950, depending on the covered service.

Veritas Legal Plan, Inc. is seeking an actively licensed Minnesota attorney to join its participating attorney network and provide covered legal services to eligible plan members.

This is a paid, non-exclusive independent-contractor opportunity for an attorney who wants to supplement an existing practice with selectively accepted consumer debt-defense matters. Applicants may reside anywhere in the United States but must maintain an active, unrestricted Minnesota law license and be able to handle accepted Minnesota matters. Matters may involve Minnesota Conciliation Court (small claims court) and Minnesota District Court. We welcome attorneys who can serve one or more Minnesota counties, judicial districts, or statewide matters.

Participating attorneys may receive referrals involving consumer debt-collection lawsuits and related debt-defense needs. Attorneys retain independent professional judgment and responsibility for the attorney-client relationship in each accepted matter.

Attorneys choose which referred matters to accept, manage their own schedules, and determine whether an offered matter aligns with their availability, conflicts analysis, experience, and geographic coverage. There are no guaranteed referrals, hours, income, benefits, or minimum caseload requirements.

Responsibilities

For matters you choose to accept, responsibilities may include:

• Review referred consumer debt-collection lawsuits and related civil matters.
• Conduct conflicts review and determine whether to accept representation, subject to professional obligations.
• Communicate with referred plan members regarding accepted matters.
• Prepare, review, sign, and file pleadings, including answers and notices of appearance, when appropriate.
• Negotiate potential resolutions with creditors, debt buyers, opposing counsel, and other relevant parties.
• Provide limited-scope legal services when appropriate and permitted.
• Handle settlement documentation, specified discovery, motion-related work, or other services within covered plan benefits when appropriate.
• Appear in Minnesota Conciliation Court, District Court, hearings, or other proceedings when an accepted matter requires an appearance.
• Maintain prompt and accurate case records in accordance with applicable rules of professional conduct.
• Communicate administrative information reasonably necessary for plan administration and payment, consistent with client authorization, confidentiality obligations, and applicable professional rules.
• Comply with all applicable professional-conduct rules, client-confidentiality laws, court rules, and licensing requirements.

Qualifications

• Active, unrestricted license to practice law in Minnesota and good standing with the applicable licensing authority.
• Professional liability insurance with minimum limits of $100,000 per claim and $300,000 aggregate.
• Strong written communication, negotiation, organization, and client-service skills.
• Ability to independently manage accepted matters ethically and in compliance with applicable rules of professional conduct.
• Ability to serve one or more Minnesota counties, judicial districts, or statewide matters, depending on your practice and availability.

Preferred

• Experience in civil litigation, consumer debt defense, collections, bankruptcy, consumer law, or a related practice area.
• Familiarity with Minnesota Conciliation Court and/or Minnesota District Court procedures.
• Ability to appear in court in jurisdictions where licensed when an accepted matter requires it.

Compensation

This is a 1099 independent-contractor opportunity . Compensation is paid for covered legal services performed after receipt of appropriate supporting work or filing documentation.

Typical covered debt-defense fees include:

Negotiation and settlement when no answer is filed $300

Answer, notice of appearance, negotiation, and settlement $400

Specified discovery or motion-related services $150

Trial appearance $375

Qualifying motion to vacate judgment $950

Additional state-specific procedures, covered-service requirements, and filing-related billing questions may be addressed through Veritas Legal Plan.

Court costs and filing fees are the responsibility of the plan member, as applicable. Referrals are based on member needs, geography, attorney availability, selected practice areas, and the attorney's decision to accept a matter.
