Responsibilities This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job‑related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job‑related knowledge and skills. Serve as an in‑class ELL/ESL support for mainstream teachers in courses with clusters of ELL students; understands content and requirements for the courses and assists staff in planning and/or best ELL/ESL instructional practices. Distribute, supervise, and administer students in the completion of assignments, tests, and quizzes provided by teachers and staff. Provide instructional assistance and motivate students in the area of math, reading, language, science, geography, and social studies. Review students' grades to better understand where additional support is needed. Help identify different language levels and needs of students; modify curriculum to support students. Manage student behavior while in ELL/ESL study lab to create a safe, positive learning environment. Assist in administering district and state‑required ELL tests. Provide feedback to parents when requested. Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as‑needed basis. Promote and support the overall mission of the District by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; act in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment. Qualifications Education and Experience Two (2) years post‑secondary education OR a passing ParaPro Score. One (1) year of student/family support services experience. Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation. Techniques for improving communications with persons using English as a second language. Intercultural communications and interactional styles. Learning and behavioral management techniques. Local community resources and regional community services programs. Computer applications related to the work. Correct business English, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Required Skills Identifying cultural differences which affect non‑English speaking students and their parents, and the barriers and opportunities to enhance the process of acculturation to American society. Assisting children and special needs students and assessing educational needs. Maintaining composure and working effectively under classroom conditions. Administering educational and school support programs. Communicating effectively with children. Operating a personal computer using standard and specialized software. Communicating effectively verbally and in writing. Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities. Working Environment Work is performed in a school setting. Occasional travel required to locations throughout the District. Hours & Compensation 176 days, 32.5 hours per week. SEIU Contract.
