Public Works Technician I

Public Works Technician I & II The City of Colonial Heights is hiring for Public Works Technician I and Public Works Technician II. These positions construct, maintain, and repair streets, roadways, drainage systems, storm sewers, water/wastewater lines and other facilities. Applicants who possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement or higher level will be hired as Public Works Technician II. Public Works Technician I: Salary: $35,360 Public Works Technician II: (Class B CDL with Air Brake Endorsement or higher) Salary: $37,440 Note: The City will provide employees with the opportunity to obtain a CDL (Class B with Air Brake Endorsement), including course enrollment, on the job training, and final DMV test. Employees who obtain this licensure will be eligible for a promotion to Public Works Technician II after one full year of employment. Responsibilities Construct, maintain, and repair streets, roadways, drainage systems, storm sewers, water/wastewater lines, and other facilities. Remove debris and blockages from streets and roadways. Operate equipment and vehicles. Establish traffic safety zones while working. Replace existing meters and install meters on new accounts. Stock crew truck with supplies. Clear trees and cut grass as necessary. Perform vegetation management and landscaping work, street repairs, concrete repairs, and utility repairs. Perform leaf, snow, and ice removal. Address public inquiries. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications High School diploma (or equivalent) and 1 to less than 3 years of directly related experience. Must possess the ability to obtain and maintain required license as deemed necessary within specified period of time. Valid Virginia driver’s license. Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening and criminal background check. Commercial Driver's License is desirable. The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting of objects weighing in excess of 74 pounds, moving in areas of difficult or dangerous access. The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions.
