Freelance News Video Producer/Editor ( Remote)

Location: Remote | Must work EST based hours

Pay Rate: $50–$65/hour ( W-2 hourly)

Duration: Freelance / Ongoing

Schedule: Part-Time | 24–30 hours/week , 2–3 days per week.

Monday and Wednesday or Thursday. Friday may be needed for additional social content, promotional projects, or breaking-news coverage. Recording days may require up to 8 hours on some days.

1. Journalism / News / Editorial Background – Experience in journalism, broadcast news, digital publications, media, or a closely related editorial environment; genuinely follows and understands the news cycle.
2. Strong Video Editing Skills – 3+ years of professional video editing experience with expert-level Adobe Premiere Pro skills.
3. Social-First Video Production – Proven experience creating short-form vertical video for TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts , including taking long-form content and identifying the strongest social moments.
4. Fast, Strong Editorial Judgment – Ability to quickly recognize compelling, timely, newsworthy, or highly shareable moments and turn them into polished content on a tight turnaround.

About the Role

We are looking for a fast-moving, creative Freelance Social Media Video Producer/Editor. This role is ideal for someone who lives and breathes news, closely follows current events, and understands how journalism, breaking news, and social media intersect. The ideal candidate will come from a journalism, broadcast news, digital publication, media, or similar editorial background and will understand how to quickly recognize a compelling story, quote, or moment and turn it into engaging social content. Working closely with the show’s production team, this person will attend podcast recordings, identify strong social moments in real time, pitch clips and content ideas, and quickly edit polished short-form videos for social platforms. This is a hands-on role requiring strong editorial judgment, excellent video editing skills, and the ability to move quickly when news or content priorities change.

Key Responsibilities

• Attend podcast recordings and identify compelling social moments in real time.
• Take notes during recordings and quickly identify the strongest clips based on news value, audience interest, timeliness, entertainment value, and shareability.
• Pitch compelling clips, social breakouts, and content ideas to Derek and the production team.
• Edit approximately 2–3 social videos per interview, selecting the strongest moments and creating engaging, social-first edits.
• Create polished vertical video content optimized for Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts.
• Work with quick turnaround times following podcast recordings to ensure timely content.
• Manage approved social content from editing through publishing across the appropriate social platforms.
• Create stand-alone social content with Derek, including promotional videos, quote cards, teaser clips, and other social assets.
• Stay current on breaking news, current events, internet culture, memes, and social media trends to identify opportunities for timely content.
• Adjust quickly when news breaks or content priorities change.
• Maintain organized project files, footage, and video assets.
• Communicate proactively with Derek and the production team regarding content ideas, edits, approvals, and deadlines.
• Consistently deliver high-quality work while working under tight deadlines.

Required Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional video editing experience podcast, journalist, host, writer, commentator, or public-facing personality.
• Journalism / News / Publications Background – Experience in journalism, broadcast news, digital publications, or a closely related editorial environment; genuinely follows and understands the news cycle.
• Strong passion for the news – lives and breathes the news.
• Expert proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro and the ability to independently produce polished social video content.
• Social-First Video Production – Proven experience creating short-form vertical video for TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, including taking long-form content and identifying the strongest social moments.
• Experience taking long-form video, podcasts, interviews, or recorded conversations and identifying the strongest moments for short-form social content.
• Strong understanding of social-first video editing, including hooks, pacing, captions, framing, storytelling, and vertical formatting.
• Experience to take notes during recordings and quickly identify the strongest clips
• Ability to quickly identify what makes a clip timely, compelling, newsworthy, entertaining, or shareable.
• Strong editorial instincts and understanding of what performs well on social media.
• Ability to pitch creative content ideas rather than simply execute assigned edits.
• Experience managing content from editing through publishing.
• Strong knowledge of current events, news, internet culture, memes, and social media trends.
• Regularly follows major news and media sources and understands the broader news cycle and media landscape.
• Experience working independently in a remote freelance environment.
• Must be comfortable working an East Coast-based schedule, regardless of the candidate’s location.
• Must be available approximately 24–30 hours per week, generally across 2–3 days, mornings typically. Monday and Wednesday or Thursday. Friday may be needed for additional work
• Experience managing social content from concept through publishing.
• Experience working in an environment where breaking news and current events can quickly change priorities.
• Must be news -driven and culturally aware – genuinely follows current events and understands the news cycle.
• Fast-moving and flexible schedule – comfortable adjusting priorities when news breaks or schedules change.
• Collaborative – comfortable working directly with hose and the show’s producers.

• Podcast recordings are generally scheduled on Monday and Wednesday or Thursday. Friday may be needed for additional social content, promotional projects, or breaking-news coverage.
• Additional work may occasionally be needed when breaking news occurs or an emergency podcast is scheduled.
