Job Title: Material Handler / Side Loader Operator Job Description

The Material Handler / Side Loader Operator safely operates a high-capacity side loader and sit-down forklift to move, stage, and load metal materials throughout a busy steel manufacturing facility. This role supports production by ensuring efficient material flow, accurate material placement, and adherence to strict safety standards in a fast-paced warehouse environment.

Responsibilities

• Safely operate a 30,000‑lb capacity side loader to transport small and large metal materials throughout the facility.

• Use a sit-down forklift to move, stack, and stage materials in designated areas.

• Support production by staging raw materials and finished goods to and from machines and workstations.

• Load and unload materials from machines, racks, and storage locations according to production needs.

• Measure materials accurately using a tape measure to ensure correct sizes and quantities are moved and staged.

• Maintain continuous and efficient material flow across the facility to support on-time production.

• Follow all safety procedures and protocols when operating equipment and working around large pieces of steel, metal, copper, and brass.

• Inspect equipment before use and report any safety concerns or mechanical issues promptly.

• Keep work areas organized, clear of hazards, and compliant with facility safety standards.

• Communicate effectively with production and warehouse teams to prioritize material movement and staging.

• Adapt to a fast-paced manufacturing environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience working in a warehouse or manufacturing environment.

• Hands-on experience operating a sit-down forklift.

• Strong commitment to safety and safe work practices in an industrial setting.

• Ability to operate a high-capacity side loader or willingness to learn side loader operation.

• Ability to read and use a tape measure accurately for material measurement.

• Comfort working around large pieces of steel, metal, copper, and brass.

• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining focus and accuracy.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in a steel or metal manufacturing facility is a plus.

• Familiarity with material handling best practices in a warehouse or production setting.

• Strong communication skills to coordinate with production and warehouse teams.

• Reliability and punctuality, with the ability to work assigned shifts and training schedule.

• Attention to detail when staging, loading, and measuring materials.

Work Environment

This role is based in a steel manufacturing facility where you work around large pieces of steel, metal, copper, and brass in a busy, industrial setting. Safety is the top priority, and you follow strict safety protocols while operating material handling equipment and moving heavy materials. The environment is non-climate controlled, so conditions may vary with the seasons. The position is on 2nd shift from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with training provided on 1st shift for approximately one month before transitioning to the regular schedule. Work attire should be appropriate for an industrial, manufacturing facility with a strong emphasis on safety.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
