Woodward High School Counselor Job Description

Philosophy: To provide a comprehensive guidance and counseling program designed to address the social, emotional, educational, and occupational needs of all students.

Qualifications: Master's Degree in Guidance & Counseling with School Counseling Endorsement on a Valid Oklahoma Teaching Certificate

Special Education Background Preferred

Report To: High School Principal and/or Assistant Principal

Responsibilities: The following are included in the Woodward High School Comprehensive Guidance Program

  • To implement the high school curriculum of the Woodward High School Comprehensive Guidance Program;
  • To provide students with support through academic, career and social emotional needs.
Academic

Counselor will:

  • Meeting with students whose names appear on the ineligible list for each marking period and, if appropriate, formulating a plan of action for success involving the student and the parent;
  • Meeting with seniors a minimum of once a quarter and informing parents continually on their graduation status;
  • Ensuring that students are aware of requirements for graduation and college admission;
  • Making necessary schedule changes for individual students that are both appropriate for their abilities and aligned with their educational and career plans.
Career

Counselor will:

  1. Assisting students in completing their Individual Career Academic Plan (ICAP) to meet graduation requirements.
  2. Guiding each student to choose courses consistent with his/her interests, abilities and career plans;
  3. Assisting students with the completion of college admissions applications;
  4. Helping students develop post-secondary educational plans in accordance with their interests, abilities and career plans;
Social and Emotional Learning

Counselor will:

  • Work with students who have discipline, attendance and academic problems and are referred by teachers, parents or administrators;
  • To facilitate small groups for individual students with identified, common needs
  • To refer students and parents/guardians to appropriate school and community resources;
  • Partner with Project Aware to provide students with additional counseling support.
  • Use Woodward High School approved counseling curriculum to assist in the development of social and emotional needs of the student

Other duties as assigned by the administration:

  1. Organizing, assisting, and promoting standardized assessment opportunities and interpreting test results to students and/or parents on request;
  2. ACT, Pre-ACT, AP Testing, and 11th Grade CCRA (Science and History)
  3. Assist in the development of a District Assessment Program and the interpretation of testing and assessment results related to career guidance;
  4. Assisting the principal in the preparation of diploma lists and identification of honor graduates in preparation for the Senior Honors Program and Graduation;
  5. Planning and/or promoting programs which enhance the academic, social or emotional growth of students, e.g., Career Fair, Underclassmen Honors Assembly & Senior Honors Program, Graduation, opportunities for student enrichment and/or remediation, scholarship opportunities and parent informational programs;
  6. Assuring that appropriate, accurate information is maintained in each student's permanent, cumulative record;
Individual Education Plan / Section 504 Process

Section 504 Plan:

  • Counselor will serve as the facilitator for all 504 plans for their assigned students. Duties include creation and oversight of Section 504 plans

Individual Education Plan (IEP)

  • Serve as the administrative representative, as assigned by the building administrator.
  • Active participation in Special Education meetings
  • Possibly carry a special education caseload
  • To consult with and serve as a resource for students, staff and parents regarding developmental needs of students, which may include:
  • Collaborate with teachers to better help them understand students with physical or emotional challenges
Professional Collaboration

Counselor will:

  • attend administration/ school counselor meetings, district school counseling meetings
  • assist in the evaluation and revision of the building guidance and counseling program each year.
  • continue personal professional growth and development
  • To participate in, coordinate, and conduct activities which contribute to the effective implementation of the high school guidance curriculum;
  • Conduct classroom guidance for grade levels you are assigned at least once a month. Monthly classroom guidance should be geared toward any of the 3 domains (academic, career or Social/ Emotional Learning).
