Job Title: Tool and Die Technician – Die Maintenance

Job Description

This role focuses on inspecting, maintaining, and repairing production dies across multiple product lines in a manufacturing plant. The technician uses grinding, and fabrication skills to keep dies operating safely and efficiently, while supporting ongoing preventative maintenance and continuous improvement of tooling.

Responsibilities

• Inspect and maintain dies throughout the plant to ensure they operate safely, accurately, and consistently.
• Operate an overhead crane to move dies between the production floor and the shop in a safe and controlled manner.
• Conduct detailed inspections of mechanical and electrical components on dies to identify wear, damage, or performance issues.
• Perform routine preventative maintenance on dies, including cleaning, adjustment, and replacement of components as needed.
• Diagnose and repair cracked, damaged, or non-functioning dies, including dies that are not cutting correctly.
• Use TIG welding on stainless steel to perform minor repairs, build up worn areas, and restore die surfaces to specification.
• Grind and finish die surfaces using appropriate grinding tools and techniques to achieve required tolerances and surface quality.
• Assist with fabrication of guards, racks, and related components that support safe and efficient die handling and operation.
• Follow established procedures to identify which dies belong to specific product lines and ensure correct tooling is used for each line.
• Document maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs to support traceability and continuous improvement of die performance.
• Collaborate with maintenance and production teams to prioritize work, minimize downtime, and support overall plant productivity.
• Participate in training and skill development to progress into more advanced die maintenance and maintenance team responsibilities.

Essential Skills

• Hands-on experience with tooling or die work in a manufacturing or similar environment.
• Proficiency in TIG welding, including experience welding stainless steel components.
• Ability to perform grinding and minor repairs on dies and related tooling.
• Experience with preventative maintenance (PMs) on dies or similar equipment.
• Familiarity with die maintenance practices, including inspection and basic troubleshooting.
• Ability to operate an overhead crane safely to move dies and heavy tooling.
• Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical components within dies or production tooling.
• Ability to read and follow work instructions, maintenance procedures, and safety guidelines.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy when inspecting, repairing, and assembling dies.
• Ability to work rotating shifts and occasional Saturdays as required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience fabricating guards, racks, or similar metal structures using TIG welding and basic fabrication tools.
• Background in tool and die work, including exposure to multiple product lines and tooling configurations.
• Experience using grinders and surface grinding equipment for precision finishing.
• Comfort working with TIG welders with and without a foot pedal.
• Interest in growing into advanced die maintenance, broader maintenance team roles, or leadership opportunities.
• Willingness to learn and participate in additional training on die maintenance and related systems.

Work Environment

This role is based in a manufacturing plant with multiple product lines and approximately 65 dies in use. Work is hands-on and shop-floor oriented, involving frequent interaction with production equipment, dies, and related tooling. Technicians use TIG welding equipment (with and without foot pedals), grinders, surface grinding equipment, and overhead cranes as part of their daily tasks. New hires train on first shift for approximately 6–8 weeks. After training, the schedule follows a Monday–Friday, two-week rotating shift pattern: one rotation from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (with flexibility up to 6:00 p.m.), and the next rotation from 6:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. (with flexibility up to 6:00 a.m.), with occasional Saturday work as needed. The environment emphasizes safety, proper handling of heavy equipment, and adherence to plant procedures while offering exposure to a variety of dies, tooling, and maintenance practices.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of SAN ANTONIO, TX.

The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $26.00/hr.
