Seasonal Arboretum Steward

The Town of Acton is seeking applicants for the position of Seasonal Arboretum Steward. This is a part-time, seasonal position that works up to 16 hours per week from April to November, supporting the daily care and grounds maintenance of the 65-acre Acton Arboretum. The Steward will be in the field, working in all weather conditions, for most working hours, with time in the office to receive work assignments. This role works to foster a safe, clean, and welcoming community space for visitors. Ideal candidates are motivated team players with strong customer service skills and an interest in environmental stewardship.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform routine arboretum and grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, pruning, watering, weeding, edging, mulching, debris removal, and light trail upkeep.
• Monitor trails, gardens, trees, and infrastructure conditions; remove hazards when appropriate and report larger safety or maintenance concerns to supervisors.
• Lead and supervise volunteer workdays by assigning daily tasks, providing training, and supporting volunteer recruitment efforts in coordination with Conservation staff.
• Assist visitors by providing directions, trail and amenity information, and maintaining kiosks and informational materials throughout the Arboretum.
• Promote a safe, welcoming environment by respectfully enforcing Arboretum rules and reporting violations or safety concerns as needed.

Minimum Entrance Requirements : Willingness to perform physical labor outdoors (lifting up to 50 lbs); Willingness to be exposed to environmental hazards like ticks, poison ivy, and weather; ability to use hand tools like loppers, saw, map and compass; comfortable walking as much as 5 miles/day in the woods; Ability to work independently and as part of a team; leading volunteers; excellent customer relations skills, flexible and self-motivated; Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications: Current enrollment, recent graduation, or experience in horticulture, land stewardship, environmental science, biology, forestry, or related field; Basic familiarity with hand tools (loppers, pruners, saws) and power equipment; Knowledge of or interest in native plants, invasive species, or trail ecology; Customer service or public-facing experience; Volunteer coordination experience.

Pay Rate : $20-$24/hour
