Basic Function

The job of Behavior Interventionist is to provide Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services and implement Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), along with other evidence-based practices, under the direction and close supervision of a Supervisor (Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or Competent Learner Model (CLM) Program Coordinator. This position is responsible for delivering direct behavioral intervention to preschool through transition-aged students who exhibit intensive behavioral needs. Duties include conducting objective observations, collecting and recording data, and supporting both skill acquisition and behavior reduction goals. The Behavior Interventionist also provides training, coaching, and modeling through Behavior Skills Training (BST) methods to support entry-level and less experienced Instructional Assistants and certificated staff. Collaboration with all team members is essential to ensure consistency and alignment in student programming and behavioral support plans. This role requires strong teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills, as well as a deep commitment to promoting positive student outcomes through structured, evidence-based approaches.


This job reports to DESIGNATED ADMINISTRATOR.

Representative Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Works directly with students individually or in small groups district-wide, as assigned by a BCBA or CLM Program Coordinator.
2. Implements ABA-based behavioral and instructional programs developed by BCBAs, focusing on skill acquisition and reduction of challenging behaviors.
3. Applies a variety of ABA strategies, including Discrete Trial Training (DTT), precision teaching, natural environment teaching, and direct instruction to build skills in communication, self-help, social interaction, play, and other essential life domains.
4. Supports the reduction of challenging behaviors (e.g., biting, hitting, spitting, stealing, eloping) through proactive antecedent strategies, prompting, and reinforcement of safe replacement behaviors. Provides assistance with personal care and hygiene tasks, including toileting, eating, grooming, dressing, and related medical needs as required.
5. Collects, records, and summarizes accurate behavioral data to monitor student progress and assist in ongoing program adjustments at various locations.
6. Assists in the development and maintenance of instructional materials necessary for program implementation.
7. Collaborates regularly with BCBAs and the CLM Program Coordinator to ensure consistent application of behavioral and instructional strategies.
8. Participates in and completes assigned CLM and ABA coursework, and engages in ongoing professional development and training activities.
9. Uses Behavior Skills Training (BST) methods to provide guidance, modeling, and practice opportunities for Instructional Assistants and certificated staff.
10. Conducts performance checkouts, including video recordings, under supervisor direction.
11. Collaborates with administrators, psychologists, teachers, service providers, and support staff at various locations to share information and ensure coordinated student support, as instructed by supervisors.
12. Attends various behavioral team meetings and actively contributes to collaborative planning and problem-solving discussions.
13. Receives and applies feedback from supervisors and colleagues to enhance coaching, implementation, and professional practice.
14. Maintains a safe, supportive, and empathetic environment, implementing force-free and trauma-informed crisis prevention and de-escalation strategies developed by BCBAs.
15. Demonstrates professionalism by modeling district values, responding promptly to communications, and maintaining confidentiality at all times.
16. Drives to various District sites to conduct work.

Marginal Functions

1. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Initial/Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education and Experience:

1. Graduation from high school or equivalent.
2. A minimum of three (3) years of experience working in an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) setting, providing direct behavioral interventions to clients or students.
3. Any other combination of education, training, and experience, which demonstrates that the applicant is likely to possess the required skills, knowledge, or abilities, may be considered.

Certification (Preferred):

1. Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB), which includes completion of a 40-hour RBT training course, supervision, and successful passage of the certification exam; or
2. Completion of 40 hours of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) training and coursework.
3. Any other combination of education, training, and experience, which demonstrates that the applicant is likely to possess the required skills, knowledge, or abilities, may be considered.

Special Requirements:

1. Mandatory Participation: Employees in this classification are required to participate in intensive, ongoing training.
2. Course Completion: Completion of the Competent Learner Model (CLM) and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) course of study must occur within one year of employment in this position.
3. Program Compliance: Employees who do not complete all training requirements within the designated six-month period will be immediately removed from the program.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

1. Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record; access to a private automobile equipped with adequate insurance coverage meeting or exceeding California's minimum liability requirements; and the ability to maintain insurability throughout employment.
2. Valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification issued by the American Red Cross or any agency authorized by the American Red Cross is required and must be maintained during employment.
3. Valid First Aid certification issued by the American Red Cross or any agency authorized by the American Red Cross is required and must be maintained during employment.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands:

1. Work in classroom or other educational settings with students exhibiting intensive and challenging behaviors, including those with significant physical or emotional needs.
2. Lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds to assist students physically.
3. Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, and stooping to support students; the position typically requires approximately 5 hours of standing or walking during a 7-hour workday.
4. Occasional climbing and balancing as needed.
5. While some work is performed sitting, tasks also require extended periods of walking or standing.
6. Use visual and auditory skills, including near and far vision, depth perception, and the ability to perceive and respond to sounds in the environment.
7. Provide oral instructions, use manual dexterity to operate office and instructional equipment, and handle a variety of materials and objects safely.
8. Ability to run on uneven terrain and safely redirect students when necessary.
9. Drive a vehicle to perform work assignments across multiple sites.
