(Nursing) Clinical Quality Specialist

Position Summary The Clinical Quality Specialist assesses and recommends quality and clinical performance improvement processes to assure that the highest standards of quality outcomes can be achieved. This position will provide clinical expertise and support to all departments by assisting with applying performance improvement methodologies and facilitating plans for improvement. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors. Acts as a resource for performance improvement, regulatory compliance and the nationally endorsed hospital quality measures. Accurately abstracts Quality Measures from medical records for internal and external measure sets (CMS, TJC, P4P, GWTG, Sepsis, NSQIP, MBSAQIP, CJR, and any additional quality programs). Leads performance improvement activities. Performs/facilitates review of clinical quality of care issues through investigation, tracking, and initiation of provider interventions. Leads incident investigations including IDR, root cause analysis, near miss, critical events and sentinel events. Demonstrates appropriate utilization of resources necessary to obtain valid and reliable data entry. Performs all other related duties as assigned. Education & Experience Requirements Bachelor’s degree in related healthcare field required. If an RN must have a BSN. Master’s Degree preferred. 5 years clinical experience in nursing, radiation therapy, respiratory therapy, or another related clinical field. Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) are required if the Quality Specialist will be participating in the Stroke Program. Receive CPHQ Certificate (Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality) from the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ) within preferably 3 years after being in the position and no more than 5 years in the position. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite preferred (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Clinical Quality Specialist responsible for abstracting surgical quality charts must obtain Surgical Clinical Reviewer – SCR for the NSQIP/MBSAQIP Program within three months. Core Competencies Teamwork and collaboration are essential, as is the ability to work independently to complete tasks. Excellent communication skills are required with all team members including but not limited to Senior Staff and Administration, Physicians, Nurses, Clinical Staff. Problem‑solving skills and attention to detail are required. Must be able to plan and remain organized with multiple tasks due. Physical/Mental Demands and Work Environment May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS database and can be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet (Employee Tools/SDS Access). Ability to remain in a stationary position 90% of the time. Constantly utilizes/operates a computer to access information. Able to communicate/teach physicians and other hospital employees quality issues, best practices, and regulatory requirements.
