Policy Overview Darke County Recovery Services establishes this policy to clarify the expectations of students and interns who participate in our Agency programs for educational and training purposes. It outlines the responsibilities of the student/intern and the Agency, the legal constraints that must be upheld, and the obligation of students to protect client confidentiality. Prerequisites and Expectations Students must request two letters of reference from professors who can attest to their readiness for the training experience, including academic preparation and maturity. Students will sign a consent to release information for an electronic background check to verify eligibility. All students and volunteers receive training and ongoing supervision in Agency policies and procedures. Regular performance evaluations will be conducted, and documentation of clinical supervision, training, and evaluations will be maintained in personnel files. Documentation and Supervision Documentation of clinical supervision, training, and performance evaluations are kept in the personnel files of all students and volunteers. Confidentiality Students must maintain the highest standards of confidentiality and sign a Confidentiality Agreement. Under no circumstances shall a student disclose client information or therapeutic activity outside the Agency. Any required disclosures to training programs shall omit identifying client information and be made only under supervisor supervision. Dual Relationships Students must inform their supervisor or Agency personnel of any personal relationship with a client. Trainees are prohibited from observing or providing treatment to a client with whom they have a personal relationship. Agency personnel will ensure such information is not accessible to the student. Professional Conduct And Behavior Students are expected to dress and behave in accordance with Agency standards of professional conduct and to be aware of Agency policies. Advanced students performing supervised clinical functions must have all activity co‑signed by their identified on‑site supervisor. Exploitative Relationships Dual relationships between students and staff are limited. Students must disclose prior relationships with Agency staff to avoid conflicts. Sexual or other inappropriate behavior crossing the teacher‑student boundary is not tolerated and must be reported to the Chief Executive Officer. Representation To Others Students must never represent themselves as professionals or experts. When addressed with implied expertise, they should clarify their student status and refer questions to qualified staff. Observation Of Clients And Therapeutic Activities Students may observe therapeutic activities only with full informed consent of the client, who must be made aware of the student’s training status and supervised by Agency personnel. Advanced students providing services must operate within their competence and under close supervision. Training Environment Students will be given ample opportunity to review Agency policies and training materials. Training is a secondary activity to client care; students may need to structure their own time for reading and policy review during periods when didactic training is unavailable. Ethical Standards Students must review the APA Ethical Standards or relevant field ethics applicable to their training. Agency Evaluation Activities Agency will provide evaluative feedback on student performance, aiming to be candid and free of surprise. Students should communicate any expectations beyond this summary review prior to beginning training. Documentation Of Policies/Procedures Students receive electronic access to the Student and Volunteer Orientation and Training policy. Copies of reference letters and evaluations are stored in the HR Support Manager’s office.
