EC-2026-045-1 Athletic Trainer

Immediate Supervisor: Principal and/or Athletic Director Qualifications Holds a Valid WV Teaching Certification in Education and WVSSAC Athletic Trainer certification Holds a Valid First Aid and CPR card Holds or is eligible to hold Athletic Trainer Certification Bachelors degree, valid West Virginia teacher certification; eligibility for athletic trainer certification Employment Term 2026-2027 School Year (Winter Athletic Season as determined by WVSSAC).   1. Instruct and advise public school student trainer and/or adult (nontrainer) assistant on current and accepted athletic training procedures appropriate for them to perform.
  2. Advise athletes, parents and coaches regarding growth and development needs of athletes in relation to specific sports.
  3. Instruct and advise athletes, parents and coaches on preventive techniques appropriate to specific sports.
  4. Advise athletes and appropriate school personnel regarding proper selection and use of protective and rehabilitative equipment.
  5. Instruct and advise administrators, coaches, students and other relevant personnel regarding needs and proper procedures in emergency situations.
  6. Advise athletes and parents if there is a need for definitive medical care.
  7. Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, educational personnel and health care professionals.
  8. Perform injury evaluation techniques and make initial impression of injury based on growth and development stage of athlete.
  9. Evaluate and screen athlete for potential injury due to previous conditions.
  10. Evaluate protective equipment and athletic environment.
  11. Provide timely and appropriate evaluation of injury and/or illness sustained by students engaged in athletic activities, in the absence of more qualified personnel.
  12. Provide emergency care appropriate to the growth and development of the athlete and the nature of the injury.
  13. Provide emergency care in crisis situations.
  14. Provide timely and appropriate treatment of injury and/or illness sustained by students engaged in athletic activities.
  15. Provide rehabilitative procedures appropriate to the growth and development characteristics of the athlete and the nature of the injury.
  16. Provide specific reconditioning programs based upon evaluation/screening outcomes. 17. Provide athletic injury rehabilitation services to athletes as prescribed by physician.
  17. Develop, implement and manage the athletic training program.
  18. Develop written athletic training policy and procedure guidelines.
  19. Establish and maintain an effective evaluation / assessment system, including recordkeeping.
  20. Manage crisis situations in the athletic environment.
  21. Assume responsibility for continuation of professional development.
Reporting & Duties
  1. Reports to work on a regular basis at the time (s) scheduled for the performance of his/her duties.
  2. Observes all rules and regulations established for his/her particular work station.
  3. Accepts responsibility in a cooperative manner.
  4. Performs assigned duties efficiently and with/without close supervision.
  5. Prepares assigned reports and records promptly and accurately.
  6. Follows directions and demonstrates good judgment.
  7. Demonstrates evidence of good personal hygiene.
9. Demonstrates knowledge of duties in particular work area. ATHLETIC TRAINER

Bachelors degree, valid West Virginia teacher certification; eligibility for athletic trainer certification Governing Principles for Employment and Assignment
  1. An individual must serve as an athletic trainer without simultaneous coaching responsibilities in the same sport.
  2. An athletic trainer must be in attendance at all county board of education sanctioned football practices and games except when excused by the county superintendent or designee.
  3. The decision whether or not a student athlete participates in a practice or game is the responsibility of the athletic trainer except in the presence of a physician who has the ultimate decision making responsibility.
  4. All rules and regulations promulgated in West Virginia Board of Education Policy No. 5112 shall be adhered to.
Supervisor(s) - The athletic trainer shall be under the supervision of the principal and the athletic coordinator of the school sponsoring the athletic program. The trainer shall report to the program's head coach on a daily basis. Evaluation - Probationary employees will be formally evaluated in writing a minimum of twice annually, continuing contract personnel will undergo a minimum of one formal written evaluation per year.
