Project Architect / Architect IV PreK-12

Position Summary:HED is seeking an experienced and passionate Project Architect IV to join our growing PreK–12 Education practice in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Technical Architect IV is a senior-level architectural professional responsible for leading medium- to large-scale projects from planning and design through construction and closeout. This role includes managing project documentation, consultant coordination, regulatory compliance, and construction phase support, with a proven record of delivering technically sound work within the PreK–12 market sector.The ideal candidate brings significant experience delivering California PreK–12 educational facilities, including a strong understanding of Division of the State Architect (DSA) requirements, approval processes, and construction administration procedures. This individual will help guide projects through complex regulatory reviews while maintaining design quality, technical excellence, and project objectives.As a technical project leader, you will provide oversight and mentorship to project teams, support firm-wide quality initiatives, and serve as Architect of Record when designated, signing and sealing work prepared under your direct supervision.HED Culture:At HED, we believe great design has the power to improve lives through positive impact. The office is a professional, open-space environment for collaborative and independent work.Responsibilities:Lead the planning, coordination, and technical execution of medium- to large-scale PreK–12 educational projectsDevelop and oversee coordinated construction documents that align with project goals, design intent, DSA requirements, and applicable codesCreate and manage the Discipline Work Plan (DWP) in collaboration with the Project ManagerCoordinate work across design and engineering disciplines, consultants, and production teams to ensure seamless project deliveryFoster collaborative relationships with school districts, educational stakeholders, consultants, and regulatory agenciesLead interactions with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), including DSA and local permitting agencies, throughout review and approval processesGuide project teams through the DSA approval process, including document preparation, agency coordination, review responses, and project closeout requirementsEnsure project documentation complies with DSA requirements, California Building Code, California Accessibility Code, and applicable educational facility standardsParticipate in client meetings, presentations, stakeholder workshops, and community engagement activitiesConduct building systems, materials, and product research to support informed design decisions and contribute to firmwide technical resourcesLead construction administration activities, including RFIs, submittals, field observations, field reports, and contractor coordinationServe as Architect of Record as assigned and sign and seal documents prepared under your direct supervisionMentor emerging professionals and contribute to technical excellence, quality assurance, and knowledge sharing across the firmRequirements:Bachelor of Science in Architecture or equivalent professional degree requiredActive California Architectural License requiredNCARB certification preferredLEED Accreditation preferredMinimum of 10 years of professional architectural experience with a strong focus on technical project deliveryDemonstrated experience delivering California PreK–12 educational facilities projectsStrong working knowledge of DSA procedures, California Building Code, California Accessibility Code, and educational facility design standardsExperience collaborating directly with school districts, educational administrators, and public-sector stakeholdersProficiency in Revit required; experience with Revizto preferredFamiliarity with UpCodes, RIB SpecLink, and current building code research tools preferredStrong communication, collaboration, and leadership skillsPassion for mentoring, inspiring, and motivating othersCommitment to design quality, technical excellence, and continuous improvementPhysical Requirements:Ability to travel to project sites, client meetings, and construction meetings throughout the Bay Area and surrounding regionsAbility to remain seated and work at a computer for extended periodsAbility to communicate effectively in written, verbal, and visual formats, both in person and through virtual platformsVisual acuity sufficient to review drawings, specifications, reports, and digital documentationOther Duties: This job description is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all responsibilities, duties, or activities.
