MECHANIC I

GENERAL FUNCTIONS

Maintenance and repair of City's vehicles, heavy equipment, other rolling stock and small equipment.

JOB FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR ACTIVITIES

1. Performs mechanical work on heavy and light equipment including gasoline and diesel engines,

transmission, brake, electrical and hydraulic systems

2. Performs routine lubrication, tire repair, welding, carpentry, plumbing, electrical and other

maintenance on equipment, assists in maintenance record keeping.

3. Performs manual labor as required in connection with construction, operation, or maintenance of all public utilities and property.

4. Builds special equipment as directed by the Lead Mechanic

5. Purchases parts for required repairs.

6. Occasionally may operate heavy equipment and trucks, etc. as required to assist with street, sewer and water system maintenance.

7. Performs other duties as directed.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Three years' experience in heavy mechanical work, working knowledge of repair of light and heavy engines, transmissions, electrical and hydraulic systems. Welding experience desired. Ability to keep accurate records required. High school diploma or GED. CDL preferred, but not required.

DECISION MAKING RESPONSIBILITIES

Requires the ability to assist with preventive maintenance as well as determining costs of repair versus replacement of equipment systems. Develops procedures at unit level. Moderate budget authority at unit level. Activities are a major source of potential liability to the City.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY

None.

EXTERNAL VISIBILITY/CONTACT

High frequency of contact with key service personnel in the purchase of parts, supplies, or services as well as by or working with third party contractors. Low frequency of contact with government officials, general public and key City personnel. Infrequent attendance or presentation at public meetings.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Shop environment. High frequency exposure to hazardous working situations. Moderate exposure to adverse weather conditions when working on maintenance of heavy equipment. Involves frequent heavy physical exertion in lifting or moving of equipment and in work requiring awkward positions using tools and equipment. May be required to work holidays, irregular hours and on call.

This position is subject to the Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy if employee has CDL.

MECHANIC II

GENERAL FUNCTIONS

Maintenance and repair of City's vehicles, heavy equipment, other rolling stock and small equipment.

JOB FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR ACTIVITIES

  1. Performs mechanical work on heavy and light equipment including gasoline and diesel engines, transmission, brake, electrical and hydraulic systems.
  2. Performs routine lubrication, tire repair, welding, carpentry, plumbing, electrical and other maintenance on equipment.
  3. Performs mechanical work for fire, medical and rescue vehicles and their on-board equipment.
  4. Performs manual labor as required in connection with construction, operation, or maintenance of all public utilities and property.
  5. Directs work of others assigned to assist with equipment maintenance and repair.
  6. Builds special equipment as required.
  7. Operates heavy equipment, trucks, etc., as required for street, sewer and water system maintenance, (occasional activity).
  8. Initiates Purchase Orders, purchases/receives and reviews invoices for parts, materials and other supplies required for repairs and shop operations.
  9. Responsible for participating in the training/coaching of junior mechanics as well as other personnel assigned to help with equipment maintenance and repair.
  10. Performs other duties as directed.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Required:

  • Five years' experience in mechanical work on heavy and light duty equipment with diesel and gasoline engines
  • Extensive knowledge in the repair of light and heavy engines, transmissions, electrical and hydraulic systems
  • Extensive knowledge in welding and metal fabrication, with steel and aluminum, for building, rebuilding or repair of equipment
  • Extensive knowledge in repair of engines, transmissions, and AC & DC electrical systems
  • Extensive knowledge of diagnostic computers for troubleshooting operational problems
  • Working knowledge using a metal lathe and other typical tools of the trade
  • Experience with computerized record keeping
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite of tools
  • Technical education/training applicable to position equivalent to two-year degree.

Preferred:

  • Technical education/training equivalent to a two-year degree after high school diploma or GED
  • Working knowledge of equipment used in the construction and maintenance of heavy civil infrastructure
  • Experience with high pressure steam boiler units
  • Advanced training in skills or best practices applicable to the mechanic trade
  • Working knowledge of fire, medical and rescue vehicles and their on-board equipment
  • Experience fabricating customized equipment to address specialized applications
  • Experience with municipal public works operations
  • Commercial Driver's License preferred, but not required

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Automotive Technology or comparable degree, or equivalent work experience and technical education/training (ten years)
  • Ten years' experience in mechanical work on heavy and light duty equipment with diesel and gasoline engines
  • Extensive knowledge in the repair of light and heavy engines, transmissions, electrical and hydraulic systems
  • Extensive knowledge in welding and metal fabrication, with steel and aluminum, for building, rebuilding or repair of equipment
  • Extensive knowledge in repair of engines, transmissions, and AC & DC electrical systems
  • Extensive knowledge of diagnostic computers for troubleshooting operational problems
  • Working knowledge using a metal lathe and other typical tools of the trade
