Our counselors handle inbound leads from highly qualified sources and receive a base salary plus a nondiscretionary monthly bonus based on performance metrics such as productivity and quality. About the Role As a Credit Counselor with our nonprofit agency, you will provide analysis and counseling to clients regarding their financial position, including creating crisis budgets and sustainable household budgets. You’ll educate clients on topics related to debt management and reduction. When appropriate, you may assist clients with enrollment into a Debt Management Plan (DMP) in coordination with their creditors, helping them repay existing debt under more manageable terms. You’ll collaborate with clients, creditors, and internal teams throughout the counseling process to ensure client satisfaction and positive outcomes. This position is ONSITE for at least the first 90 days. After completing onboarding, training, credit counseling certification, and consistent performance as a counselor, you may be eligible for our performance-based hybrid work program. Hybrid schedules are never guaranteed but may be offered after the initial period. You’ll engage clients and stakeholders across multiple channels, including phone, email, SMS, fax, chat, and occasional live events or in-person meetings. Key Responsibilities Client Communication & Counseling Responding to potential clients who have contacted us for assistance and documenting outreach in our client management system (no cold calling) Advising clients and responding to inquiries about financial matters across phone, email, SMS, or chat Providing clients with relevant financial education resources Explaining financial topics such as credit reports, bankruptcy laws, wage garnishment, and consumer protections Financial Assessment & Planning Assessing clients’ full financial profile, including income, assets, debts, expenses, and credit reports, and conducting in-depth client interviews Calculating clients’ available monthly income and estimating debt repayment timeframes based on debt amount, interest rates, and available funds Creating and recommending spending plans, budgets, and strategies to meet financial goals, including potential enrollment in DMPs Assisting clients with changes to budgets, plans, or strategies due to life changes Documentation & Compliance Maintaining up-to-date industry knowledge and securing certification as a credit counselor through the NFCC (cost covered by the agency) Preparing written communications and contracts, including DMP documentation, and supporting paperwork submission to creditors Accurately storing documentation and maintaining detailed client records, including session notes and correspondence Collaborating with internal teams to resolve DMP proposal issues and ensure a seamless client experience Referring clients to community resources when appropriate Compensation Structure Our starting salary is $39,000 per year, and there is an automatic $1,000 raise upon completion of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) Credit Counseling certification. New counselors are also eligible for our Bridge Plan, a non-discretionary bonus program designed to provide equity and stability during the first 24 months of employment. This program rewards quality client engagement and positive outcomes with bonuses ranging from $500 to $1,000, with a typical payout of $900 for meeting performance expectations. After 24 months, eligible counselors transition to a revenue-based Retention Plan, which expands their earning potential. We believe financial counselors deserve fiscal stability, too. What We’re Looking For Education : A four-year degree in business, finance, or a related field—or equivalent experience—is required. Experience : At least one year in a financial services field such as mortgage lending, real estate, credit counseling, or insurance. Skills : Strong written and verbal communication, comfort with technology (Outlook, Word, internet-based tools), and the ability to work across multiple communication channels. Traits : Friendly professionalism, punctuality, organization, and a strong sense of purpose. Bonus : Spanish fluency and residence within 10 miles of our Winter Park office are preferred but not required. Why Work With Us Consistent Hours : Work a predictable 8-hour shift, with a start time between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Eastern. So that you know, one Saturday shift per month is required.
