Department Marketing Statement:

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

The Mail Processor performs a variety of duties related to the processing and delivery of US and campus mail. This includes, but is not limited to, operating high speed mailing machines using electronic scales; recharging departments for outgoing postage; picking up and delivering mail throughout the campus; handling accountable mail such as registered, certified, and express mail; prepares US Mail for "returned to sender"; uses variety of stickers to identify handling of packages with addressing issues; operating mail truck and other material handling equipment. Mail Processor is expected to arrive at work on time due to the scheduled nature of services offered to UCSB campus by dept.

Required Qualifications:

• Two years of experience in the handling of campus and U.S. mail, including a working knowledge of postal regulations and postal rates.
• 1-3 years experience and basic knowledge of major shipping carriers and the array of products offered

Preferred Qualifications:

• High school diploma
• Knowledge of US Postal Service product and services offering.
• Awareness of current postal rates; familiarity with the operation, function and purpose of computerized mailing systems and mail management software.
• Ability to read, write, perform mathematical calculations, understand and follow generalized and specific work instructions, both oral and written.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Good organizational and time management skills

Special Conditions of Employment:

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Work M-F 7:30am - 4:30pm, schedule can be modified/adjusted depending on needs of Mail Services operations.
• Required to hold a valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies and procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
• Satisfactory criminal history background check

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

• 55% Mail Sortation, Delivery and Addressing - Sorts and delivers US and Campus mail incoming; picks up outgoing mail for processing; prepares US Mail for "returned to sender"; uses variety of stickers to identify handling of packages with addressing issues; updates UCSB depts staff and mail route database as instructed.

• 25% Mail Preparation, Dispatch and Service Selection - Operates postage meter mailing machines, calculates charges and records to proper departments. Maintains awareness and knowledge of postal rates, periodic changes to the USPS rates and USPS service offering, customs requirements, weight and size limitations of all classes of US and International mail.

• 10% Material Management and Organization - Operates mail truck, dock lifts and handles parcels weighing up to 50 lbs with keen awareness of personal and staff safety. Makes special deliveries throughout day as necessary. Help maintain a clean and organized personal work area as well as the dept space.

• 10% Trackable Mail, Address Quality & Billing - Dispatches and receives registered, certified and insured mail in accordance with US postal regulations. Looks up information for insufficiently addressed mail to ensure correct delivery. Assists with the accumulation of postal re-charge backup in preparing of monthly billing or in response to dept billing inquiry. Performs all related and unrelated job duties as assigned by supervisor.
