Overview Job Title: Wastewater Heavy Maintenance Mechanic Department: Regional Wastewater Reclamation Job Type: Classified Salary: $26.39 - $31.67 per hour (hiring range); $26.39 - $36.95 per hour (pay range) Open Until Filled – first review of applications will be on 03/20/2026. Pima County Wastewater Treatment seeks a dependable, skilled, and motivated Heavy Duty Maintenance Mechanic to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair heavy industrial equipment such as pumps, blowers, conveyors, gearboxes, hydraulic systems, and other critical plant machinery. Responsibilities Perform operational and preventive maintenance of complex heavy-duty industrial equipment using hydraulics and pneumatics. Fabricate, construct, install, repair, and align heavy-duty equipment including deep well pumps, water pumps, piping systems, centrifugal pumps, and bearings. Conduct critical repairs to systems and equipment to maintain integrity and compliance with permits, licenses, and regulations. Interpret and apply codes or standards to work situations. Read and interpret complex blueprints, schematics, and diagrams; prepare sketches, drawings, and estimates for projects. Operate specialized equipment such as submersible pumps, speed increasers/decreases, blowers, conveyors, gearboxes, mixing equipment, and stationary engines. Use precision measuring equipment (micrometers, dial indicators). Coordinate equipment and system modifications with operations and maintenance staff and facility managers to minimize service disruption. Inspect, service, and maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles used in duties. Ensure safety practices and equipment are used by staff. Maintain comprehensive records and logs of work performed. Prepare periodic and special reports for management regarding equipment and facilities. Conduct on-the-job training for operators and maintenance staff; provide oversight and inspections. Minimum Qualifications Five years of mechanical maintenance experience in fabrication, installation, or repair of large heavy-duty equipment, deep well turbine pumps, submersible or centrifugal booster pumps. OR three years of experience with Pima County as a Wastewater Maintenance Specialist II performing similar work. Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted. Preferred Qualifications Minimum six years experience in industrial mechanical equipment, including routine maintenance and repairs of pumping systems, turbine pumps, displacement pumps, submersible pumps, centrifugal pumps, booster pumps, gearboxes, plumbing, pipe fitting, and blower maintenance. Minimum four years specializing in advanced maintenance, repair, diagnosis, troubleshooting, construction, fabrication, on-the-job training, and preventative maintenance. Minimum four years experience using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS). Minimum four years experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Visio). Licenses and Certificates Valid Arizona driver license required at time of application. Continued valid AZ driver license required at time of appointment. Subject to a 39‑month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review. Some positions may require a valid Arizona commercial driver license (CDL) with endorsements and a Class D license at the time of appointment. Physical/Sensory Requirements Constantly operate and inspect mechanical equipment. Frequently use and move tools and equipment weighing up to 75 lbs. Occasionally ascend/descend ladders and stairs; use ladders and work platforms. Operate motor vehicles or golf carts safely and legally. Undergo repeated exposure to loud noise, mechanical parts, oils, vibration, electrical shock, hazardous chemicals, extreme heat, and confined space entry. Working Conditions May be required to work on an on‑call rotation. Constant exposure to loud noise, moving mechanical parts, oils, vibration, electrical shock. Exposed to obnoxious odors and hazardous chemicals. Exposure to extreme heat and adverse weather conditions. Work on uneven or slippery surfaces.
