Vice President of Ambulatory Access & PCHA Patient Access Services

JOB SUMMARY The Vice President of Ambulatory Access & Packard Children’s Health Alliance (PCHA) Patient Access Services plays a critical leadership role in the ambulatory ecosystem at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health (SMCH)/PCHA. Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President (SVP)/Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Physician Practice SMCH/CEO PCHA, this executive is responsible for championing and governing efficient and optimal ambulatory access across all SMCH/PCHA services and sites. The position will oversee every aspect of patient access, engaging all patient touch points related to access with the goal of establishing a seamless and coordinated approach for patients, families, clinical care teams, and referring providers. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The essential functions listed are typical examples of work performed by positions in this job classification. Employees may also perform other duties as assigned. Collaborate with the Associate Chief Medical Officer (ACMO) for Ambulatory Services SMCH/Medical Director of PCHA on optimal, efficient, and timely patient access, supporting clinical operations, high‑quality care, and equitable financial stewardship. Collaborate with Stanford School of Medicine (SOM) chairs, chiefs, physicians, department leaders, and clinical services to improve patient access, referrals, and care coordination. Support the operations and growth of community partnerships in collaboration with Strategy and Business Development. Provide strategic direction and oversight of the PASC (Patient Access Service Center) Business Systems Team, including technology & systems support, training, quality assurance, and data analytics. Lead the Digital Health team, focusing on the digital front door and leading industry‑leading digital transformation initiatives. Develop and lead digital health strategies to enhance and standardize access, care, and patient/family experiences across the ambulatory ecosystem. Measure, analyze, report, and drive key performance indicators (KPIs) related to patient access, providing oversight and accountability to internal forums. Engage partners across the organization to identify barriers to patient access and implement data‑driven operational and technological improvements. Ensure seamless connectivity and continuity between the ambulatory experience and inpatient or procedural experiences, developing integrated access centers and concierge programs. Analyze and recommend technology improvements, effective use of EMR, scheduling, appointment, and revenue cycle systems, and implement digital access touch points. Serve as subject‑matter expert in all aspects of patient access, including registration, scheduling, digital health, revenue cycle processes, and access regulations. Participate in committees, workgroups, and strategic planning, budgeting, and professional development activities related to ambulatory care. Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local healthcare, privacy, and access laws and regulations, and pursue professional growth opportunities. Promote the mission, vision, and values of Stanford Medicine Children’s Health and PCHA, representing the organization professionally and collaboratively. Oversee budget development and financial management for SMCH and PCHA ambulatory access services, ensuring fiscal responsibility and financial efficiency. Advance business strategies to foster growth, improve market share, and address community needs through innovative programs and care models. Develop a culture of financial responsibility, reducing fraud, waste, and abuse. Partner with SMCH/PCHA leaders to drive strategic integration and transformation initiatives while maintaining integrity of individual business entities. Utilize Lean methodologies and A‑3 problem‑solving to enhance operational efficiency. Champion continuous improvement through staff development and engagement. Perform other job‑related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: Master’s degree in a work‑related discipline/field from an accredited college or university. Experience: Ten (10) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience; five (5) years of substantially similar work experience in patient access or revenue cycle, and five (5) years managing patient access staff. License/Certification: Patient Access certification preferred (e.g., CHAM), obtainable through NAHAM. KNOWLEDGE Professional demeanor and effective communication with staff at all levels. Leadership and persuasion skills. Presentation and facilitation abilities. Recruiting best practices and employment law knowledge. Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite. Critical thinking and analytical skills. Experience with EHR software technologies. Decision‑making in complex situations and independent work. Attention to detail and timely completion of assignments. Multitasking under pressure and meeting deadlines. Judgment and problem‑solving in difficult situations. Rapid response to changing priorities. Confidentiality of medical, financial, and legal information. Knowledge of regulatory requirements. Project and change‑management skills with resource allocation. Lean quality management principles. Financial budgeting and stewardship. Partnering with physician leadership to execute change. Consultative skills for sensitive situations. Training, mentoring, and evaluation of staff. Prioritizing work and developing solutions for complex problems. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Physical Requirements and Working Conditions are available from Occupational Health. PAY RANGE Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role, and may be determined by education, experience, skills, location, and internal equity.
