Lead Electronics Specialist

Position Title Electronics Specialist – Journey Sign-On Bonus A sign‑on bonus of $4,919 is available, paid in two installments: $2,459.50 within 30 days of hire and $2,459.50 twelve months after hire. Eligibility requires that the candidate has not held a probationary, permanent, or time‑limited appointment in the last 12 months with the North Carolina state government. Primary Purpose Building Services provides full maintenance and repair services for all UNC facilities. This role supports campus buildings through electrical and electronic systems maintenance, repair, and construction services. Position Summary Guide shop employees in daily work assignments. Operate and maintain specialized classroom systems, water boost systems, sewage lift systems, motor drives, and other critical building electronic/electrical systems. Use specialized electrical meters and equipment—such as Dranetz power meters, infrared cameras, and recording meters—to gather and record building voltages and power usage. Formulate reports for campus departments and outside vendors. Write preventive maintenance programs for new building electrical systems and equipment. Update documentation for obsolete systems through communication with manufacturers and vendors. Utilize laptop computers for system diagnostic interrogations and troubleshooting and programming for extraction of required system histories and sensitivity report generations. Maintain documentation on facilities systems for Health Care facilities and present to Joint Commission and UNC Hospitals upon request. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Associate’s degree in electronics or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be earned from accredited institutions. Management Preferences In‑depth knowledge of the NEC and NFPA codes, rules, and regulations and ability to train others on them. Ability to interpret information from O & M manuals for new complex systems. Ability to read and interpret schematic drawings, equipment manuals, and manufacturer guidelines. Ability to provide focused support for bio‑safety level (BSL) 2+ and 3 labs. Required Licenses/Certifications Requires a valid North Carolina driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to the start date. Special Physical/Mental Requirements Ability to work under hazardous conditions, including exposure to chemicals, asbestos, and extreme temperatures. Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with NFPA 70E electrical standards, safety shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and other PPE. Ability to work on hands and knees for extended periods, move objects weighing at least 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation, climb and work from ladders, boom lifts, and scaffolding up to 60 ft. high. Ability to wear required safety harnesses, fall protection, respirators, face masks or shields, protective gloves, and safety shoes. Serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of essential university operations, even during adverse weather or emergency conditions. Position/Schedule Requirements Evening work occasionally, night work occasionally, on‑call occasionally, overtime occasionally. Valid driver’s license. Weekend work occasionally.
